£250 Upgrade help

I can either upgrade my current spec of:

Q6600 @ 2.4(stock) - Artic 7 freeze w/ AS5 compound.
Asus P5Kc (combo for DDR3)
OcZ 2gb DDR2 800mhz
BFG GTS 8800 640mb
corsair hx520w
seagate 250gb sata
(40gb IDE samsung, optical drive, card reader, zalman fan control @ 3x80mm, some generic case)

or sell up (not knowing how much i would get plus £250) and aim for a i5/i7 spec ?

You could just overclock your cpu to ~3.0GHz (easy with the q6600 G0) and buy a 5850 plus an extra 2GB of ram. This would be a good upgrade for gaming (if thats what you want the pc for)

I'd sell your 8800gts buy a HD5850, 4gb of 8500 ram and a better cpu cooler and clock that q6600 to 3ghz+.

indeed it will be used for games, i will aim for a HD5850.
would you not recommend going to 4gb DDR3 at 1333mhz?

I did intend to clock my Q6600 but was told my A7-freeze would be efficent to do that?

You could overclock with that cooler, what marley was hinting at was that you might be able to get a higher clock with a better cooler.
