Not as straight forward as you think, we all know the new i3's are going to arrive at OCUK within the next few day (hopefully) but which one would be best in the circumstances for a light gamer? i3 clocked at 3.3GHz with HD 2500 graphics or i3 clocked at 3.4GHz with HD 4000?
 
are you going to be using the iGPU for "light" gaming?
If so, I would say the one with HD4000 but if not, 100MHz clock speed difference in CPU core speed does not matter much ;)
 
Yep, I've been doing my research, all the i3's will have HD 2500 but one will have HD 4000 (not sure if I'm allowed to mention the exact name of the CPU). Also, by light, I mean about 2 hours a week (BF3 at 1600x900). Money-wise it's not great for me yet, may be able to buy a proper graphics card by the time AMD release the 8xxx series or nVidia release their 7xx series. Thanks for the answers :)
 
You can name a cpu its fine, just not shop competitors like xxx (<- see ;) )

BF3 - Onboard cpu gfx you will be on low to medium settings and low res.


Keep in mind that performance wouldnt be as good due to using a lower cpu than a 3570k at 4ghz.

Aaah okay, it's just I posted in a thread yesterday and the thread got deleted :/ The CPU's in question are the i3 3225 (3.3GHz, HD4000) and the i3 3240 (3.4GHz, HD2500). Are the iGPU's overclockable?
 
Im guessing no or not by a lot for overclocking a igpu. Depends on the mb i would think.

Also them new cpus are dual core not quad which would also effect performance with a hd4000 by a good margin i would believe.

Aaah okay, thanks. Am I right in thinking that the i3's and i5's (with the same GPU) would perform within about 5% of each other? i.e. both CPU's coupled with a 7850 should both be able to max out BF3 at 1080p

If you getting a non overclockable i5 why not a 3550.
And also OcUK would have told us when they start selling them, which may not do at all.
 
Benchmarks i have seen before have tried comparing cpu from a range of low to high end cpus and they did pretty much not effect the fps for bf3. I think the different fps was with cpus that were dual core tho compared to 4 or higher.

Im just trying to remember tho so maybe have a look for bf3 benchmarks yourself.

Bf3 is very gpu dependant, tho for mp, the cpu does come into the field more so than sp gameplay in bf3.

Hyperthreading wont make a difference afaik. Infact HT generally doesnt do much for gaming on any game or well i should say really HT only helps in very few titles compared to without HT. Also i dunno if its the same anymore but HT used to cause stuttering in games. Maybe thats been long resolved now. I think it was in bf3.

This is just from what i remember from reading about stuff, so take it with a pinch of salt this post lol. Others who are more in tune with what your asking will hopefully pop by and reply a better response.

Benchmarks show that HT barely makes any difference which persuades me to hold out for a few months until I can get more money or go for i3 + 7850 instead

Wow, you know what, too much effort to try and find out which ivy's have which gpu. Was mildly curious and after a quick search and various links everyones happy to show the clockspeed but not something as relevant as the number of eu's etc... not even intels own site.
