2500k OC stock speed display

I have just upgraded from a fairly old q6600 setup, to an I5 2500k setup on an Asus p8z68-v board. I've had my q6600 overclocked so I was entirely new to the 2nd gen overclocking.

So I've done a fair bit of research and got the fair jist of it, seems a lot easier for sure! At the moment I'm using the AI tuner in manual and upping it by the multiplier to see what I can achieve and at what temps with all of the voltges on auto.

I used a safe bet of around 4gz to start off with. saved and rebooted, now there wasnt any major hangs, BSOD, stuttering. just booted straight up to the O. In windows, the speed is displaying as 3.3 @ 3.3, the Bios is also displaying 3.3.

I've tried disabling every possible auto overclock option in the BIOS also to eliminate any interference with the definitive displayed speed. Didn't work.

I ran cpu z and the speed was displayed as 4000mhz. So I;m a bit confused with this, as I've always had my speed dislayed in the past.

Thanks for any help.

P.S. And hi! newbie here :>

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If CPU-Z is saying 4000MHz then 4000MHz it is.

You don't have to worry what Windows or the BIOS are saying.

Quite often Windows only reports the stock speed of the CPU regardless of the overclock.

Yeah I just installed my 2500k and put it up to 4.0ghz. I tried 4.6ghz but it wont boot, then again I didnt change voltage as I dont know if I have to enable/disable things too?

Thanks!

Yeah it's no biggie then I suppose, aslong as it works :>

I'm not sure about voltages as of yet. I'm going to have a little play around with it the now and i'll keep it posted!

Well my first little session of playing about with my new chip today, managed to hit 4.8ghz! seems all good on prime 95 so far. temps aren't really budging over 72 C.

The only voltages I touched was the Vcore which is running at 1.42, and the ram at 1.5 with LLC on ultra.
any higher than 4.8ghz and things start to toast up on prime! Not willing to risk it, still a mahoosive OC and more than happy with it.

Although it's not certain, I wouldn't go over 1.37v. Anything over could cause the chip to degrade by some bit, but there's no solid evidence for this yet.

Just ignore Windows, it can't seem to read the overclocked speeds correctly for Sandy Bridge CPUs. For 4.4ghz mine did say 5.8ghz but after a Windows update it says 4.3ghz now. Almost right but still so far :p.
