Am looking to put together another gaming Pc with a Ufo case I picked up. I plan to watercool.

Usually I just over spend! But am trying to keep things on a dudget. This will be used for gaming and some bluray backing up ripping.

Would a 2500k overclocked be plenty enough?

Am guessing going with this socket type and Cpu I will only be able to use a single GC?

whats the rest of the PC specs?

2500K is still fine for gaming, I have a I7 950 running @ 4ghz which I still use for gaming and just got a 970 which has replaced a aging Radeon HD 5830 GPU lol

I just switched from a 2500k to a 5820k and in day to day tasks the difference is minimal, in the majority of games there's almost no difference.

Encoding though is night and day difference :D two to three times faster.

A 2500k is still a fine chip, if you feel the itch then drop in a 26/2700k for the HT and your rip times should improve :)

It's still a very good cpu, still running mine here no problems.

Intel have yet to release a new cpu worth upgrading to. :(

This is the conclusion i came to, was looking to upgrade my core 2 duo setup and it didn't make sense buying new when 2500k's are reasonably cheap 2nd hand!

Still good yep, will run fine with any modern single gpu. For sli I prefer an i7. I've owned both i5/i7 Ivybridge and several haswell i7's. For games the difference is tiny. SB is also a bit cooler than the newer cpu's.

Just to reinforce the above, 2600k @5ghz (HT is off unless I am encoding) and dual 290x.. Not cpu limited.

Surely an i7 is not needed for gaming as no game uses HT??

A few I play a lot do, particularly with sli. Bf3/4 and Crysis 3 being ones of note. I found the former two to be a lot smoother witha 3770k as opposed to a 3570k with sli 670's. Gpu use wasn't going higher than 80%, and cpu use was very high. Switched to the i7, saw much more consistent higher card use, less stutter and lower CPU use.

Would there much difference in performance with my GTX 980's in sli if I upgraded from my 2600K to 5930x though?

Really itching to push the button.
