2500k to 3770k

Another vote here for do it, just ensure that you have the latest bios on your board that supports the 3770k before removing the old cpu.

At a rough estimate, you would need about 4.7/8 on a 3770k to match a 2550k at 5ghz. Extra threads of the i7 are nice to have though, particularly with sli in certain games. I found my old 4770k at 4.2 matched my previous 3770k at 4.5.

Well my 2500k is currently at 4.4Ghz and so I'll aim for the same from the 3770k and see how we get on. IIm hoping that it will allow a tiny bit more head room for the Xfire cards

Yea I'm definately going to test it first! It's from a friend though and tbh I'm sure it's fine but we'll see. Hard to find any recent benchmarks with this chip in things like BF4 etc but we'll see.

clock for clock the 3700k will be 300mhz faster, plus you have added benefit of hyperthreading 4 cores/8 threads

should manage 4.5ghz with most chips/air cooling

Ive seen them sell on ebay a Not Working/Damaged for more than that. I would break the guys arm off at 75 quid.

I remain amazed at how depreciation proof these things are. Considering they came out in 2012 I think the fact they're usually commanding £100+ amazes me

Each generation since has only added 10% performance though and there's still plenty of folks with the 1155 socket on their boards. There's not been THAT much movement in interfaces/extras so folks are sitting happily on sandy/ivy machines. Without the glut of folks upgrading to push the price down...
