Is the £40 extra worth it for the 2600K?

I was just about to pull the trigger on a 2500K when I thought about hyper threading.

I know for gaming it isn't worth it but:

I will be doing some HD video editing/encoding and am wondering is it worth the extra money for hyper threading and the 8MB of L3 cache?

Will the difference be staggering/worth it?

It's more like £85 more.

I suggest only getting the 2600k if you do encoding reguarly as the 2500k is no slouch.

Plenty of reviews around now which will give you the info you need.

The difference is more then £40 though. If it was just £40 difference then the 2600k would be a great buy.

The 2500k is plenty quick enough I reckon.

I also contemplating a Sandybridge setup now (Well, I'm waiting to see how all these issues play out first!) - not that I require something of this spec really, more because I don't tend to upgrade very often and want it to last a while.

How much benefit is there to be gained with HT when you already have four cores? I tend to "multitask" a lot as a developer, as well as run virtual machines with some gaming thrown in as well.

Also, I'm sure I read something about i7 and six cores - is this something that is on its way?

I do almost no video encoding, except re-encoding some small HD videos from my camera occasionally, which in fact, I usually use my 2.26GHz MBP for.

ivybridge. It's basicaly the equivilant of how they revamped the i5's etc before. So they will get die-shrunk and some will have 6 cores, possibly 8. I beleive it will be tri-channel memory as well?

If these are likely to be 1155, then I think I'd just get a 2500K, then sell up and go with one of those toward the end of the year.
