Hello all.

I'm thinking about getting a 250 bike to commute into town, free parking for bikes woop woop!

The reason im thinking 250 is im not a massively experienced rider, just had a 125 i used to use now again in a field etc. Been driving a car for 2 years now. Just trying to find good ideas for a 250's.

I would love something like a cbr 250 rr or rd 250 but i now it aint going to happen :(

cheers

yeh as haz said, make sure you have a full licence. and if you have got a full licence,

i would suggest going for a ninja 250, 2nd hand or new. very good bikes.

The 250cc market is pretty limited these days as there is no legal significance to this engine size as there used to be.

Purely for commuting in town, I'd be tempted to look for a trail/adventure type bike rather than a sports bike, they are much easier to manoeuvre in traffic and you get a better view over the tops of cars. Something like a DR250, or XLR250 etc. Alternatively there are 250cc scooters which have loads of storage space, but I guess you probably aren't interested in them.

If it's just a town commute then a 125 would also be good.

My brother just got a brand new rd125, nice bike but soooo expensive.

And I'm taking my full license soon, just a case of getting used to using a bike on the road.

Ninja 250 looks just my cup of tea.

As others have said you have to have a full licence to ride a 250.

Are you doing DAS ? Or are you over 21 ? If so i would'nt get the ninja 250 they look nice but they are a 4t and very slow, infact your brothers rd might be quicker.

If you like that type of bike then look at a 2t like an rgv250 / nsr250 they will put a big old smile on your face :D

I can do over 70 on my YBR125 four stroke. If it's just for a town commute then I'd have thought a four stroke would be fine. It'll use less fuel and will be more reliable to boot.

I hear this a lot but I disagree. You're coming from a big bike experience angle, in which case sure, a 250 4T might seem slow, but the fact is they are bang on the 33bhp restricted license limit. That puts them faster than an RD125, and with more useable power than than the narrow 2T powerband. They also handle well, are very reliable, look decent and get great reviews. Obviously a banshee 250 2T like an RGV (I had a KR1-S) will be much faster and focussed, but its hardly the ideal commuter bike, and when you remove the rose tinted specs, by modern standards they are pretty crap bikes for anything other than reliving a bit of nostalgia.

That's why i asked if he was doing DAS or over 21, i can see where your coming from but
people who are looking at these bikes aint looking just for a commuter bike they are looking for a sports bike.

If he's on a 33bhp restricted licence then yes they are great as that's what they are aimed at and they do look good,
but even though they are 33bhp they are also are more heavy, yes they may be a bit quicker than a 125 2t but not by a lot
+ they cost a shed load more.

In short if he's doing DAS he's better off looking at a 400 4t/ 250 2t, if he's on a restricted then yes go for it.

If he's doing DAS he's better off with a 600. The 400's and 250 2T are old bikes now, unless you can find a mint one but then they go for crazy prices....and the CBR400 weighs more than my ZX9R!

Why are you looking at 250's? You can't really class them as a "big" bike; a little bigger and heavier than a 125 certainly, but not much of an upgrade.

I have been looking at all sized bikes, only looked at the 250 ninja because of this thread!

Ideally i would like a 600 (although it would be restricted), something like a sv650s.

I've got a 250 hornet :)

It is not a commuter bike - It drinks more petrol than my old 1200 bandit and the parts are a real bitch to find (unless it's parts from the Fireblade)

If you want a commuter, go for any 4 stroke 250 - they're all pretty much the same now - Single or Twin cylinder. Older CB250's, GS250's, the new CBF250 and ZX250R are decent.

If you want a racing bike, go for an RS250 or RGV250 (or RD/TZ/TZR/KR1S etc.)

The only real varations are styling and whether or not it's 4 or 2 stroke. A 4 stroke 250 (based on the hornet mind) should do around 90-110mph with decent acceleration but struggling a bit towards the top end. A 2 stroke will do around 130 and be quicker to hit top-speed after 80mph-ish than the 4 stroke.
