2560 res is it worth it?

I have a U2711 and a 480 GTX, I haven't had any slow down in the games I play - Fallout NV, Dead Space 2, DoW II, BF:BC2. I came from a 24"er and definitely would buy the U2711 again, I wont bother with the new 30" version as it wont fit on my desk!

For anyone using a higher resolution than 1080p. How is it for gaming? Do you still use AA in games if your dot pitch is so small?
And if not, does the turning of AA off, counter the extra load the higher resolution would demand from the gfx card?

I find 27" @1080p I cant realy notice much difference above 2x or 4x aa, depending on what I'm playing, but I guess it's a tricky question as high aa is certainly demanding on the gpu, so there will be an ofsett there, but there will also be a counter ofsett as the game is running at a high(er) res.

The framerate sacrifice between amount of aa V's resolution i imagine is quite hard to quantity as the benefits of more aa are quite subjective, i suspect even moreso at resolutions above 1080p.

I would guestimate that you would need little if any aa, at resolutions above 1080p, assuming your screen is 30" or less. How many extra fps you would get though, in terms of general gaming experience on average... tough question. It also brings 120hz monitors into the equation as if you have a decent amount of gpu grunt, it is conceivable that the extra perceived fps might be better than the higher resolution, in terms of general gaming experience.

This is pure conjecture on my part, but they seem like like logical considerations.

hmm thanks for all the input everyone and im still just grabbing info and sitting on the fence for a bit.

joe i dont think it offsets it much but its really good when crappy ports lack proper AA or things like crysis that refuse to AA the whole sceene the smaller dot pitch would really kick in i would hope.games that lack complete AA or have older visuals also would get a fair boost, you could use perhaps ambient occuslion with nv drivers and 2560 for left 4 dead.

without 2560 and a nv card i would have no real way of adding extra visuals oomph to an older title.

would you guys agree this is correct?

i would also be interested to know what people find regarding aa and the low dot pitch, ive gotta say im not confident i could tell between 16aa and no aa without seeing them side by side, but i can definitely tell with gfx detail.. i dont tend to faff about with comparing this sort of thing

i am looking forward to amds next incarnation of gfx card [or sticking in 2x 6950s, with 4gb or graphics ram] i would think all games for a while will be playable on max with decent fps

it feels a lot more involving for me anyway, also the ps3 looks amazing on it too so that was part of the reason for upgrading :)

Sort of in the same position as the op, 1650x1080 currently with a glossy screen which I do like/get on with (HP w2207h). It was a night and day difference from my old crt. Now looking to upgrade but again want to be able to see the difference (size, res, quality) which I feel the 24 inchers don't really offer. The U2711 however ticks every single box.

Now my concern, the anti glare coating!? Some have said they get on with it fine, others hate it. Currently having a glossy screen I'm a little concerned. Has anyone gone from glossy to the U2711 who could share their thoughts???

i do get motion sickness in games with low FOV on this monitor as its so wide and im less than 2 feet away [30 would be too big i think] but im getting used to it,

same here! had to force MoH and BFBC2 singleplayer in 4:3 mode or my head will spin after 10 minutes

my U2711 is awesome. superb colours, excellent viewing angle and i actually use my monitor as 2 monitors. i have my web browser on right side, and left side is all the other stuff such as chat, music, download manager. there is just soooooo much space.

only downside for this monitor is that you'll need a very powerful GPU. my 5870 wasn't able to cut it.
