2560x1440 which card?

thanks for the reply guys, im really confused now... but i think i might just go for the 6970 (NOT 6950, some ppl seem to have these 2 cards confused...?)

after reading many reviews, most common outcome was 6970 wins on higher resolutions such as 2650. but 570 is closer on lower resolution - which i have no need for :)

this way, single 6970 hopefully will last me for at least half a year, until i get enough cash to crossfire another 6970 in, which should be enough to run anything for at least a few years?

What do you guys think?

ps. regarding unlocking 6950, i just dont think the hassle/risk (as most reference are gone) is worth the £40: 200-6950 240-6970, plus 6970 can o/c better.

Intriguing. That is very recent that article, has it been driver updates? Have always been under the impression that because CF required such regular driver updates it was always very hit or miss.
 
Is doing pretty well there, though I'd be inclined to say a 480 SOC would do you the best. As fast as a stock 580. Though having seen the thing about CF perhaps a 6870 now and another in the future is the best shout where as a the 480s are a dieing breed and won't be around to buy very soon so SLI would neeed buying now.

The 6xxx has had better scaling from the get go over it's predecessors.

Yeah I knew that but I never knew it was that much of an improvement. I figured it was more around the 40-60% mark. Kind of makes me wish I had of gone CF 6870's instead of 480s. A lot cooler and wouldn't need 950w

OCUK have loads of stock in three different reference design cards.

It's personal opinion. If he's going to crossfire he would save £100, which could go towards a nice SSD or another upgrade.
 
its mroe like saving of £30 per card (im buying one for now, cant justify £400+ on gfx cards...), the 6970 does perform about 10-20% better than 6950 (not bad for a 15% price increase!), plus more overclock room, see my link.

im jsut worried 6950, flashed or not might have some trouble with my resolution, but 6970 o/c will handle it a lot better?

8igdave you keep saying 6870, do you mean 6970?
 
Arnoldma: I would personally buy a GTX 580 3GB. The extra VRAM will assist you at that resolution superbly.

hey if i had the money i'd get 20 gtx580... i really appreciate the suggestion guys, but i really cant spend more than the price of a 6970 - £250ish

i see 8igdave, dont worry mate im not having a great day either! at least we get to post on this forum at work :)

a flashed 6950 is the exact same as a 6970. I have my 6950 flashed and overclocked, so it's possible.

The only difference is that the 6970 I believe has slightly faster memory and has 2x8pin connections instead of the 6 and 8 pin on the 6950.

I'm running dual monitors@1080 currently. My GPU usage is only 40% on world of warcraft when running at 60fps max settings. There's also the room to get another card later on once more demanding games are available.
 
Yes but not all 6950s flash, dont get me wrong, if this was a months ago, id go with the 6950 in a heartbeat, when most of them are reference.

i just dont think saving £30 is worth all the hassle to finding a reference card, that may or may not be reference - as manufacturers are not changing product code when switching over to non-reference.
 
Arent there also differences in shaders or something between 6950 and 6970 regardless of unlock? Can't remember the exact spec differences. Though real world it's probably only a few fps in it. Personally I'd go for the extra £30 as £30 really isn't a lot.

Sigh, I typed 6850 and 6870 in this post as well. I wish I was at work at the moment, revising for a uni exam tomorrow and it's just so stupidly hard I might cry. Never do maths :(

Yes, i did see that... but i still think £30 is not worth it, or for the cards you mentioned it's ***£20*** difference, lol. surely, for £20 (less than 10%) you'd have to be pretty stubborn to pick the 6950 over 6970...?

i know for a FACT 6970 can o/c higher, simply due to higher base clock.
