AS title says really guys. I am after a 256GB SSD for me mac mini somewhere in the region of £400. Have absolutely no idea which to go for and would love some advice.

Cheers

Do you mind me asking which model of Mini you own and why you want to spend so much on a SSD? As said by the other poster that's a lot of money for a very small gain.

Since when has an SSD been only a small improvement over a mechanical disk?

OP, my advice would be if you're not desperate I'd save your money and see what the market is like in about 6 months time. Bigger/better SSDs are on the way and you'll get a lot more bang for buck.

Depends on what you are doing in reality. If you are just using PC for office apps then I doubt you would notice the gain.

'Cheapest' around that size is the 240Gb Corsair at £460...

It's a nice boost but I wouldn't spend what is essentially 75% the price of a Mac Mini on an SSD

That's what I was getting at in a round about sort of way. P.S. My neighbour (that's the one I told not to buy the Mac Mini - if you've read my other posts) is loving his. Got it this week and says it's the best thing he's ever bought. However, as I pointed out to him this morning he is still using his Windows mouse keyboard and monitor so in a way he has paid £649 simply to use OS X?

I paid £2k to use OS X, if he prefers it it's his money :p

Im about to spend £400 on an SSD but it's going in a Mac Pro so it's kind of the way forward :p

Got SSD's in some of my other machines and it with out a doubt the best upgrade i could ever buy. I have spent hundreds before on graphics cards, processors and motherboards but nothing improved my experience as much as my SSD's

So yeah £400 is a lot for a SSD but i need a decent size one in my mac mini as i have no room for a secondary drive. I would also say an SSD is the obvious choice for a mac mini too as like the mac mini its small quiet and consumes little power. Plus when i move away from the current mac mini i am using (purchased Feb this year) i can transplant it into my next machine.

Simples

In fairness I stuck the 256gig c300 in my mbp and that was about 40% of the cost of the mac (got student discount distorting that a little) and all in all I think it was worth it! On the one hand the power management isnt quite as good as the hard drive cant completely power down, but on the other hand it is stupidly fast!

If you have the money id recommend it any day!

I suppose if you can afford it but personally I wouldn't bother in a mini :p

Can't you get like a 80Gb Intel and then run a FW800 2.5/3.5" external disk?

The Mac Mini is marketed as a "BYOKM" machine, so I see no problem him using an existing keyboard and mouse :p

I have a 128Gb SSD in my 2Ghz old Mac Mini. It absolutely revolutionises the machine and makes it an incredibly capable small PC.

In terms of outright performance it knocks the pants off a lot of things far above it's weight.

I'm waiting for the price of SSD drives to fall before mine gets the upgrade. Oh, and slot loading Blu-Ray laptop drives..
