whats the best OS for a dell C400 with 256mb 1ghz PIII?

got the latest debian on at the moment works but takes ages for apps to load.
Oh and I must be able to do pxe install as I have no optical device for this machine.

or shall i get another 256 or 512 Mb for it?

I assume your using gnome with debian?

or puppy linux

There is another one but I can't remember the name.

I suggest starting with xubuntu and crunchbang.

You could probably pick up 512mb of ram for it v cheaply to give you some more options. Xubuntu is nice, i installed it on a laptop with 256mb of ram which would crawl along after i had optimized the crap out of windows XP already and it ran really well.

How much time can you give to it? If you can be bothered to do a full old school style linux install building the packages specifically for your machine and its specs you can get gentoo running on a lot less than what you have, slackware also does really well in a low performance env...
