2600 as an upgrade from 3930k?

I want to build my son his own gaming PC. Currently he uses my 3930k system so it needs to be faster than that. Budget is a consideration as he needs everything. I see there is a 2600/B450 bundle for £217. I would obviously need to add RAM and a GPU etc.

On the face of it the 2600 seems a little faster than my 3930k. Is that correct and is that bundle a good deal or is it worth pushing the budget a little higher? I and likely to pair it with a 1070/1080/V56/V64. He is a big Fortnite player.

I know the 3000 series is launching soon but that is out of budget as I need to also get him a GPU etc. I also didn't want to give him my 3930k as it would be getting him into a dead platform.

Thanks.

My aim is to get no slower than my 3930k and Vega 64, which is why I am looking at a GPU better than a 570. But thanks for the suggestion. Yes it might be better to wait for the GPU and see what happens with Navi and Super. They will be out of my budget but may push older cards down. I am not in a rush.

RX570 is still a great GPU for £120 - Plenty for Fortnite at 1080P - and an ideal stopgap until either you upgrade your Vega 64, or source something else for your son.
Thanks. Is the 2600 a reasonable CPU for Fortnite and a 570?

Look the deal is great, especially if you plan to play the games, however if not going to play the games then is difficult choice.

Reason is that a 1600X @ 4.1 vs 3930K @ 4.5ghz are neck and neck, with the 1600X having an edge on gaming.
2600 ofc is different kind of beast, yet again tough call for resolutions 2560x1440 and over.

Is one of those situations, where you need a lot of head scratching. I moved from 3930K to 6700K and the difference on games was HUGE.
But those were mostly heavy single thread games like WOT & ESO.

And thats why my advice is for 3600. You might spend £80 extra over the bundle buy a good B450 and 3600 but could worth.
Again, if you plan to buy and play those 2 games the bundle is great.
Thanks. I think the advice for a 3600 is worth listening to. So I will see what happens with pricing when it's released.

Give him YOUR 3930k setup and get yourself a new Ryzen 3*** build?

He's your son and getting a great CPU (I know as I have same chip) He'll not care it's older tech as long as it'll play his games. Let him keep the 3930k, overclock it to 4.5 (easy enough) and buy him a 580 with a freesync monitor. Job done. The 3930k is still a REALLY handy cpu even though it's older.

...plus you get to get new tech toys all to yourself :)
Yes good plan and one I have considered. But there are a couple of issues with my motherboard; one of the PCI slots has stopped working and a couple of the USB ports also stopped working. It runs fine in the remaining ports and PCI slots. But it doesn't feel right giving him something that's broken. It's been fantastic value over the life of the system though.

What is the kind of budget you are looking at? A Ryzen 5 3600 will be around £180 to £200 at launch and the Ryzen 5 2600 is already as low as £120. That £80 could get you a GTX1660 or RX590 into the budget.
No firm budget. But that's quite a bit of difference in price. I'm not sure the 3600 would be worth almost double the price of the 3600, especially as being on AM4 means he could upgrade the CPU again in the future. Thanks.
