Right guys, I am buying either a 2600k or 2700k for a new system build.
The CPU will be cooled using water.
The target is to overclock the CPU to its max stable speed.

The price difference is about £5-£10 (retail cpu).
Is it worth spending extra on the 2700k?

I've read that both cpus perform identically when overclocked and its down to the luck of the draw. The 2700K cpus are not in any way cherry picked.

Let me know as I need to place the order within 24 hours, so I can get the machine up and running this weekend.

Thanks

Oh yes, if he is willing to buy second hand CPU and is able to get a good price - then absolutely go for a Sandy bridge i7. They are excellent CPUs, and depending on the price - better value in terms of price/performance.

However, I got the impression he was looking for a new CPU (as he mentioned a retail version) - and in that case I would go with an i7 3770K - since it almost the same price as a i7 2700K and not much more than a i7 2600K, while offering better performance-per-clock and those nice new features you mentioned.

Hi gents,

Thanks for the input.

First off, I have a voucher with another supplier, so the prices for me are as follows:
1. 2700k: £200
2. 2600k: £195
3. 3770k: (£250) - roughly.

IMO, the 3770k is not 25% better than the 2600k.

Hence, I am not buying into the 3770k which has its own (heat related problems).
I want to buy mature technology.

IB is completely out of the question due to cost/performance.

So its 2600k vs 2700k.
I am ordering today.

Wow, £200 for a brand new i7 2700K.

Yup - I would go with that. It is worth the extra £5 over the i5 2600K for the mere chance of a better binned CPU and slightly higher resale price.

I've been reading on forums and a lot of them are saying that the newer batches of 2700k cpus are worse than the 2600ks. In a nutshell, they are the same/similar CPUs.

I think the first batch of 2700ks were the best, then things declined (which I find strange, assuming that as a manufacture process improves, so does the quality of the silicon...but there you go).

PS. I shall be keeping this CPU probably for the next 3-5 years, hence resale price shouldn't be factored in.
