Which of these CPUs is preferable to the average user? I'm not sure whether the benefits of hyperthreading on the 2600k outweigh the slightly higher 'out of the box' and lower power draw of the 3570k.

I also read somewhere that the 2600k overclocks better than the 3570k, but then again the 3570k allows you to use PCIe 3.0 on Z77 boards.

I'm not even sure whether or not the latest games (or ones coming out in the next year or two) make use of more than 4 cores.

I recently moved from a 3570k to a 2700k , the difference is night and day but bare in mind I use two GPUS so the I7 really brings the minimum frames up.

For some games performance is no worse or better, for some others performance is up slightly.

Depends on the price you can get either for, while yes the 2600k can in general clock higher due to the soldered on heatsink rather than crappy pasted on heatsink found on the 3570k it's still a silicone lottery, and roughly speaking going from a 4.5ghz sandy to ivy you would only need 4.2ghz ish to match that old 4.5ghz

But sandybridge in my experience is cooler to run

few games do make use of more than two cores, BF4 crysis3 and future games will as more and more are using cpus better

Theres hardly any difference from pcie2 to pcie3 atm

If I were you id go 2600k and a z77 board, having hyperthreading helps

Huh?

As said above, i7 Sandy over and above any model of i5. As for PCIe 3.0, take a look here, there's minimal difference between Gen 2 and Gen3 particularly with a single card.
