Hi there , I finally got my B3 sandy bridge board today and got to put my system together! I havent done any overclocking yet as im not sure how long to leave it to wair in before I turn it up lol. What I thought was as standard the CPU is 3.4ghz but when not needed it clocks to 1.6 and under pressure it goes up to 3.8ghz but when I monitor this in CPU z, the highest I get is 3.6ghz? Do I need to mess with the turbo mode?
 
Turbo Boost depends on the number of cores that are working heavily. If you're only stressing one core, you'll get the full boost. If you're stressing all four, you'll only get a minor boost.
 
Also bear in mind that when you do start overclocking, you will be disabling turbo boost.

Don't worry too much about wearing it in lol, start playing:)
 
i7 2600k Obliterates Any of the AMD Hex-Core CPU's if its out of your price range maybe you should look at the i5 Sandy Bridge Chips, Doesnt have to be a "K" if your not going to be overclocking.
 
I have just bought the 2600k aswell and asemble my pc next week. I opted for the sabertooth p67 as it looks like a top board for this cpu. I wouldn't suggest overclocking @5ghz on air and would just stick to 4.7-4.8. I've read some reviews about it being risky to go beyond that. If your cooler is liquid it should handle 5ghz fine. Your mobo comes with the new bios that oc's auto anyway so you shouldnt have to mess about with the turbo settings
 
Sorry this has me confused, if you OC a sandy the turbo boost is disabled, does it still have a speedstep to clock it down when idle, or is it running full tilt all the time?
 
Yeah it still has speed step and you don't disable turbo mode!! You can only over clock the turbo, as when u change the multiplier number it will only actually over clock when turbo kicks in ! And under normal use clocks down to 1.6ghz
 
4.5 GHz seems to be average i5-2500K overclock, with i7-2600K being closer to 4.7-4.8 GHz. They definitely can't all be clocked to 5 GHz "with minimal effort", unless your info solely comes from reviews with hand-picked engineering samples.
 
theres a setting in the bios which lets asus do everything. its set me at 4.3 when the turbo kicks in. think that will be fine for now until i find some software to stress that. cheers
 
On Stock Volts i got my 2600k to 4Ghz with no problems. 9C Hotter than stock with Stock Cooler.
 
what all the above have said about stressing one core is correct by default. However if you have a P67 chipset you can force TurboBoost to work with the same ratio on all cores. I have the i5-2300 with all cores set to a max of x35. As such, even on apps which only stress 1 core, the CPU will happily "boost" to 3.5Ghz :cool:

So you may be able to set your i7 to TurboBoost all your cores to around 4.1Ghz, saving electricity when you don't need it :D
