Hey

Getting my boy a new monitor for his birthday. He's a hardcore fortnight gamer and all he keeps going on about is that my monitor is 1440 165hz and he has a 1080 60hz :D

So Im think he's ok with 1080p, but I want to get him a higher hz one. He has a 980ti at the moment but he'll have my 1080ti once I get a 3080 or whatever so ideally stick to g-sync.

Only worry is that he has 2 monitors now, both are 60hz. Is it ok if the second one is still 60hz? Will that cause and issues?

Budget about £250 very max £300

Thanks

Lucky little fella has a great daddy! :D

I suggest following tftcentrals calibration for a good default setup that you may want to tweak. If you check the link below you see they use Racing mode with brightness 10, Contrast 80 and custom color mode RGB 98,99,96.

Motions superb at 280hz if he had 60hz before he jusy gained 220hz thats some upgrade. Hopefully all works out.

Sometimes you have to spoil them. :D I e got one at 11 and one at 2 so he can be spoilt for a little longer

Thanks for the suggestions, I'm a little lost with monitors. I can't even see faster than 80-100hz so seems pointless to me. I have mine capped at 120 just because it makes me feel happy at that point

I grew up on a CRT and nearly cried when it broke and had to use 60hz for years. He should notice its getting CRT like now as far as LCD is concered.

I have a post also where i discuss the little brother 24 inch and why in the menu its important not to use ELMB SYNC and set to off but set adaptive sync on which is the Freesync/gsync compatible option. And the Overdrive should be set to 60 this is quite important stuff so its worth doing it before he goes mad on it.

With all the settings in here it should look impressive even to you, You should maybe notice animations and blur being better a lot less blurry than 120hz. :)

Thanks for that. I don't usually mess with the settings on monitors. But I'll give it a go.

Them were the days of CRT monitors. Used to be a nightmare getting mine into a taxi to take it round to my mates for a LAN party :D

Hey @Rofflay it's my son's birthday tomorrow, but I'm worried this isn't the monitor he wants.

He keeps going on about the resolution of mine now (1440p 27") so I could take this monitor back and get him a 1440p 145/165hz monitor.

So for about the same price of £370 what would you recommend?

similar spec but you loose Dell build quality, Dells 3 year solid warranty and by all accounts the Dell reviewed really well. I’m not sure how well the G27Q is calibrated from factory.

Not had a dell monitor for years. But they have always been nice monitors and I've heard the warranty is great. Think I'll go with that is he decides he wants a higher res screen.

I was away good to know, If the Dell was a better monitor for games i would have bought one its as simple as that. Its image overall will always beat 165hz. And if the game has MSAA then theres not much to nitpick really.

That dell looks good tho.but the Asus is a nice monitor.

He has a old Samsung. I bought it used (can't remember the model, I'll have to check it out) but for a 4/5 year old monitor and 60hz it's excellent. Nearly as good as the Asus look wise.

Anyway. He's more than happy. He's pretty hardcore with gaming. I think all his other online mates have high refresh rate monitors so that's all he spoke about.

I told him you recommended it and to use the setting you mentioned. He was like wow that's dark. But now he loves it.

Maybe contrast 80 then and brightness 20? I really suspect 120cmd is right where i suggested though but it would differ in a daylight room. I simply think contrast 80 is too glaring and bright almost like bloom is overdone.

Did he check he has 280hz btw? I had to enable mine in the menu and in the display setting of windows i had to manually enable the 280hz tickbox. A good way to tell is to open the monitor osd and on the info tab it should state 1920x1080 280hz.

It is good he is pleased though, Thats what counts i think it will grow on him more and more and at 280hz he has a very sligbt advatage on his mates who are probably all 144hz or 240hz. Its nice to know when you are beaten it is you and not the equipment.

Ha yeah he had a bit of a blip (he's OCD) windows was saying 60hz and games didn't look right.

So dad stepped in, 2 seconds later, scrolled down a bit more on the Res setting in the Nvidia control thingy. It seems it has 2 sets or resolutions. It's set to 270 and he's happy.

I've told him to turn the brightest up a little. But because I told him you recommended the monitor and then showed him the setting you recommended, he's sticking to it even tho I told him to turn it up a little.

He has autism and once he has something in his head that's it. So, I'll leave him to it and it looks great too.

Any setting for my pg279q :D
