27" for gaming... Optimum?

From what I've read, 1080p won't be as good on a 27" compared to 1440p.

I have a 27" 1080p screen at work and a 27" 1440p (and a 23" 1080p) at home and I can honestly say that 27" 1080p is crap in comparison but before I got the 27 1440p, I thought 27" 1080p was fine.

How much extra grunt is needed for 2560 x 1440?

Would a R9 290 be adequate?

By the same token, if drooping to 24" 1080p at 144hz.. how much grunt does that need in comparison and would it be worthwhile upgrade from a 22" TN panel?

Thanks.

1080p at 120fps would, obviously, be 100% more than 60fps (so 144hz is a bit more).

1440p vs 1080 is around 70% more.

I think a single 290 with a good overclock and a good aftermarket cooler can run any of the 2 solutions fine, but 27" 1440p has one advantage: 70% more pixels = less apparent jagged edges = 2xMSAA required (while I would say 4xMSAA is standard for 1080p on large screens).

Like everything, comes down to personal preference and more often than not people will champion their own choices.....

A have a friend who had his best gaming experience on a turd of a pc getting about 20 fps.... loved it and wasn't going to hear anything different.

For me personally, I have the benq xl2410t and it's done me well for a while, I went to the xl2720t and while I liked it, just nowhere near worth paying for in comparison to what I had.

Did I think it was better? Sure.... 330 better? Not even close.
Was 1080p on 27 inch provide a good experience? Yes a higher res would be nice but it's still great.

Use distance selling regs to try a few before you buy.

1440p will cost a lot more to get the same smoothness though

I had a 27'' @ 1080p and honestly I didn't really enjoy it, 1440p on the other hand is bloody amazing.

With all that said, and this is personal preference I guess, I can't stand playing FPS's on a big screen. Between 22-24'' is the sweet spot for fps imo.
Playing MMO's/RTS/RPG on a massive screen is bloody awesome though

Out of curiosity and entirely non-judgmentally, this being an enthusiast's forum, are the comments about 1080p being too jaggy at 27" generally from people who'll get up close to see the difference between that and 1440p? I.e. would someone who's just a casual gamer be more wowed by gaming at 1080p on a 27" than they'd be disappointed at the faint appearance of jaggies on the same monitor?

E.g. I game at 1650x1080 on a 22" and don't particularly notice jaggies these days, even though I'm on a low-medium end system and generally don't fiddle on with AA. Would a person such as me be noticeably struck by jagginess on a 27" at 1080p?

As PCM2 said, a few people will be saying they think it'll be too blocky without having seen it. I know that is true of myself - my 22" to 24" experience suggests that 27" @ 1080p would be too low a pixel density for me, but I've never tried it so it's conjecture.

You're currently using a display at ~ 90 PPI, a 27" 1080p monitor would be 81.6 PPI so noticeably more jaggy but not a huge difference.

For comparison a 24" 1080p is about 92 PPI (indistinguishable from what you're on) and a 22" 1080p is about 100 PPI (noticeably sharper, probably slightly too high for my liking on normal text).

Honestly though these numbers tell only a small part of the story, trying it is the only way to know for sure.

Also another thing is that yes 1440p is obviously better on a 27" than 1080p.... But unless you have the cash for a beast of a graphics card (290, 780 etc.) then you are going to have about 50% worse framerates, so on a budget I would prefer to have less pixels and 50% faster fps.

1920×1080 1080p 16:9 24.0 277 91.8

1920×1080 1080p 16:9 27.0 311 81.6

2560×1440 WQHD 16:9 27.0 233 108.8

There you go... Last 2 numbers are Pixel pitch and Resolution, so 1080p 27" is rather low and 1080p 24" is not that much worse than 1440 27".
