27" for gaming

If you can push it I can really recommend the Hazro HZ27WC (no glass). A bit past your budget but very good. I have two and have been really impressed with the picure quality. Some may say it's not up to the Dell or HP build quality but it's at least half the price, I reckon they are a bargain.
 
If you're simply after 27" for gaming I wouldn't recommended the HZ27WC myself tbh. Perhaps he even intended to use it for console gaming which instantly renders the HZ27WC useless.
A lot of gamers want to run things at 60FPS at the highest available settings as well, the GTX580 is a great videocard but even it will struggle running everything at the best settings using the native 2560x1440 resolution. Last but not least, I wouldn't call over 400 pounds (even with the current weekly deal) "a bit" over his budget ;)

What is a bit over his budget is the BenQ EW2730V, depending on how sensitive you are to it there might be some minor ghosting however due to it not being a 'super fast' tn-panel but a VA panel. On the upside, it will have better colours! If you're extremely worried about such things (I personally haven't noticed ghosting on monitors with far worse specs) then I think you'd be best off with the Hanns.G HZ281HPB 27.5".
PS: OC UK doesn't stock the BenQ EW2730V but there is always Google which has that neat 'shopping' option ;)
 
28" 16:10 TN is absolutely horrible since the vertical viewing angle will kill your experience totally!

Also, games today are programmed for 16:9.

Firstly you obviously wouldn't use the WC for consoles, it does however have low input lag. Does he want to run a 60fps? I know I don't as long as I preceive smooth gameplay, beside which we're on the verge of single cards which will play well on 1440 screens, thinking of the future ;) I bought mine at £379 which is £129 over his £250 budget, maybe sounds a lot in % terms but fr what you get it's very cheap. They are always going on special even below what I paid so wait for one of those. I still stand by my suggestion but choice is his;)
 
I'd avoid the hazro, they have conflict issues with some gpus not detecting them.

That said my 6950 pushes it at native res and gives a solid 45fps just.
 
well if you want to go the bit = lots route the dell u2711 ;)

I have 2x sapphire 6950 toxic(both unlock so effective 6970) but due to motherboard issues not been able to complete the i2500k build yet, once I get it all put together hopefully the xfire(+ i2500k @4.6ghz) will let me play most games @2560x1440 on high/max settings with decent fps :)
 
At the £250 budget, how crucial is it to have 27"? Because I'd be looking at a 23/24" IPS for the same money personally, or maybe less - the LG 23" IPS is around £130 and so great value. Potentially you could end up with three later on for some surround gaming.

Really, we need to know a few things before stumbling in with recommendations:
  • What system/console are you going to be using to drive said monitor?
  • Is it purely for gaming, or will there be desktop work involved too? Or films?
  • How far away will you be sitting from the screen? Will it be used as a normal desktop screen, or more a TV?

For instance, the 23" IPS would be a good recommendation if your answers were: average/good system, gaming, desktop work, occasional films, close up like a normal desktop.

However, a 27" 1080P monitor would be a good recommendation if your answers were: average system/console, gaming, films, mid-distance away.

I'm guessing, as you have a GTX580, that a 23" would be a better bet, or if you can stretch, the 27" Hazro 1440P.
 
I can go to £300 at a push and it will be for gaming and surfing the net and will be normal desktop use.
 
Don't make the same mistake as me and get a 1080p 27" monitor. I could only put up with mine for a month before upgrading to a 27" Hazro.
They (1080p 27" Monitors) are fine for gaming, but the size of everything during desktop use gets really irritating.

If your GPU can't handle 1440p, perhaps you may want to go with a 24" monitor instead. Saying that my 6870 HAWK handles everything at 1440p as long as anti aliasing is off.

Um depends what kinda gaming he does... Dells really aren't great for hardcore fps gaming, but fine for MMOs, etc.
 
Will be just for BF3 tbh that`s all i play at the moment,got 2 in mind the 27" iiyama E2773HDS or the Asus VG236HE 23.

If you want a budget option consider the Hanns G 27.5", I have that one and only play BF3, works well and I got mine for 212 GBP.
In hindsight I would not have gotten a 27" without the higher resolution though.

Maybe....... but the only recent game I've found that won't run in 16:10 was Driver: San Francisco, everything else has catered for 16:10.

BTW, I have 3 of the HannsG 27.5" monitors, all good (turn down the brightness), and find the additional vertical resolution great, same with my 30" Dell.

So, don't let it put you off buying a 16:10.

Edit: If I was to buy another monitor, I'd probably go for one with the larger resolution, like as suggested the Hazros look pretty good.
