Hi, I have a Nephew who has just passed his test and looking for first Car! Edit He is 27 years old!

I'm a bit out of the loop on recommendations but I know a bit about cars as I was a Crashed Vehicle Estimator and worked in the Halfords for 16 years, so know what to look for damage and service wise.

The question is what would you go for for £2000 - £3000. He could go more but I alway think you scuff up you first car and it will be parked on a Road in Brighton which is terrible for parking. He is also saving for a deposit on a flat so any more would reduce this.

Any recomendations appreciated!

Something like a 1.6 MK2 Focus.

Whatever he can afford to insure :)

Seriously - with him only recently passing his test, insurance premiums may still be high regardless of his age - so best to run some quotes first before committing to anything.

As above a MK2 Focus as above is a good shout, but if something smaller is needed for parking then maybe a MK6 or MK7 Fiesta

Yep good point. I forgot to say he is 27 so will add that yo priginal post.

In times like these, it might actually be worth suggesting something like a Mondeo!
LOL I haver a Mondeo! :)

I bought in new in Jan 2009 and I still have it. Has just 50k miles on it and I love it! :)

I think it's a bit big for him as a first car though, although he is tall.

I quite like this for a first car:

No idea but I will echo others of checking insurance first!

It's funny. I see the cars people who pass today can have as a first car and it blows my mind all the gadgets it will come with compared to my first car. Though I suppose my first car still had power steering so I don't know how good I had it.

It seems most things he puts in for insurance comes out at £950.
