27" Monitor Confusion

I've just been in receipt of a 27" LG 27ea83 and plugged it all in and then realised that my mini display port to DVI adapter won't cut it due to the maximum resolution possible of only 1920x1080.

I've been reading around a little bit but i can't make sense of anything. What adapter do i need to get this displaying at native res on my Mid 2012 uMBP?

I've just ordered a mini display port to display port adapter and already tried a mini DP to HDMI adapter which didn't work.

I don't really want to have to buy a dual link dvi adapter as that's £50.

Generally speaking only Dual Link DVI and DisplayPort support resolutions above 1080p on most monitors. HDMI is often limited to 1080p and is included on almost all screens regardless of resolution due to its popularity. My U3011 for example features many connectors that do not support its native resolution; only Display Port and Dual Link DVI allow me to use it at 1600p.

The Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort adapter should work fine.

Worked a charm!

Don't think i'll be gaming at the full 27 inches though. Far too large. Playing everything windowed at the moment.

Lovely monitor though for everything else.

Not sure whether to start a new thread but since using the Monitor with displayport i'm experiencing some annoyances.

Waking up from sleep doesn't work and i'll either need to restart the computer or unplug the monitor and plug back in. This is annoying and i may even send the monitor back because of it.

Also, everything seems to be over sharpened under displayport with the sharpness slider doing nothing on the monitor. I'm tempted to buy the dual link now or just save my money and go back to my trusty Dell 2007WFP...

Im pretty sure you need a USB powered dual link adapter to make this work.

I was in the same position as you and it was the only thing that worked effectively.

I'm using the dual link dvi adapter from apple on a 27" and everything is perfect. I haven't tried with a displayport cable but it would certainly be the cheaper option.

The displayport cable caused too many issues for me and caused much anger so i've resorted to buying the extortionately expensive Apple Mini DP to Dual Link DVI for £49…

Luckily it's sorted all my issues that i was having with displayport like over sharpness when turning the monitor on from cold which i would have to rectify by changing colour profiles on the monitor and also the waking up from sleep issue that was the most annoying.

I shouldn't have to buy a £49 cable but now i can enjoy my monitor without getting angered at all the problems i was having!
