Background
To give a quick bit of background, i have been using a LG 48" CX 4K 120hz as my main monitor with 2x 27" as additional screens.
now running 2x 27" in stacked setup as i have moved he LG to the bedroom, as just felt too large on my desk & being so close.
I also don't really want to do the GPU chase anymore, want to setup graphics & forget.
Currently running 5900x 32GB ram & 3090

looking for this thread to be a bounce of ideas of others.

Question:

Do you think i should go 27" 1440p or 34" 3440x1440?

The current 27" i'm using is a pretty standard dell IPS at 1440p with 75hz no HDR
I'm enjoying the size & space on my desk, but am debating 34" too (ive had 34" in the past and loved it apart from games that didn't support it, but that was a good 6-7 years ago (was an early adopter)
I've got 2M desk so now got tons of room.

either way want another OLED/mini-led for blacks.. & HDR

Main games:
Witcher 3
Oydessy
Truck Simulators (ETS/ATS)
Last of US

MP
Battlefield
gunfire reborn

34" only seems to be QD-OLED right now, their doesn't seem to b have any good choice with no glitches..
27" seems to only have WOLED, which LG might be to dim & ASUS is hard to find in stock

Looking for thoughts/advice & feedback

This shouldn't even be a question - the Alienware QD-OLED ticks all your boxes, and while it's not without potential issues, it does have the 3 year Dell warranty to fall back on

Guessing if the 48 is too big the 42 would be as well?

If it's just those two sizes, the Dell QD-OLED would certainly be my pick. Anything you need to run at 16:9 you can do so on the OLED and with the backlighting, or lack thereof, it won't be as distracting with completely black bars at the sides. Plus the better warranty and advance replacement from Dell is hard to beat, assuming they do what they say.

If it's purely gaming then OLED, but for any productivity then OLED looks awful in Windows which the OP should know from the experience with CX48.

"Awful" is a bit of an exaggeration (to put it mildly!). I use mine for software development 8 hours a day, plus a few hours music production on the odd evening, and while it's not quite as crisp as the nano-IPS I had before, it's far from poor, and certainly not unusable.

Also - purely anecdotal - but I don't get anywhere near the same eye fatigue/tiredness as I have done with previous monitors.

34" is great though I have found myself looking at 32" 4K monitors but similar to yourself I don't want to have to continue to buy the high-end GPU's to ensure I get a stable frame rate in future titles.

I currently have the LG 34GP950G which is arguably the best IPS ultrawide on the market though it's not available for sell anymore as LG seems to be pushing OLED on all their new monitors. You could look for a 34GN850 which is the same monitor but without GSYNC Ulitmate and HDR600.

I've been tempted by the AW3423DWF (down to £800) at the moment but I use my monitor for work 8-10 hours a day and burn-in / text clarity worries me so I'm keeping this for now and seeing how the newer OLED panels fair.

BUT if you're purely gaming, AW3432DWF is a no brainer.

"Certainty not unusable" isn't really what I'm looking for, personally. Although I will add that my comments are also anecdotal and as always with monitors it's probably a personal choice, really.

I have thought about moving from my current ROG Swift 1440p 165hz monitor to a 34" ultrawide as well but im quite fussy about image quality and im concerned that 3440x1440 is going to look considerably worse on a 34" screen than 2560x1440 does on a 27" screen.

Are there any other higher resolution 34" gaming monitors on the market ?

What about "far from poor"?

The pixels on a 34" 3440x1440 are almost exactly the same size as a 27" 2560x1440 screen:

Subpixel layout IS something to consider - particularly when looking at OLED/QD-OLED monitors, but (IMO at least), it's been blown way out of proportion, I've never noticed any clarity issues with mine, and the picture quality improvement while gaming far outweighs any minimal negatives.

34" is just a 27" monitor with extra pixels on the side.

The PPI is identical so image quality is exactly the same, it doesn't 'stretch' if that's what you're worried about.

Yea, it's actually smaller on the vertical side which isn't too much of an issue but I do miss the vertical height which is why I was tempted by a 32" 4K but even my 4070ti would struggle to keep decent frames and 32" 1440p is a no-go for PPI.
