2700k and 2500k functionality on z77 boards ?
Im waiting like everyone else seeing how IB proccessors pan out , but I have a UD5 gigabyte z77 , was wondering what functionality will I be losing with going with either chips as to the IB alternatives ?
Realise that the Gen 3 bandwith will be lost , but iv got a 6970 which is enough , and there"s always CF or an upgrade to 7970 which seem to do just as well under Gen 2 .
unlike z68 which switches between GPU n CPU graphics , will I be able to do this on Z77 ?
I know the gigabyte has vis lucid vertu which combines the two together on Z77 , will that also be so with sandybridge cpu"s ?
And finally Is the onboard graphics sufficiant for browsing , movie playback anyway , which I was planning IB for , whilst avoiding the use of a 240W card except for gaming ?

Functionality will be the same, with the exception of the pci-e bandwidth as you already mentioned. If your motherboard supports Lucid Virtu you'll be fine with a SB cpu in there. And yes the Intel graphics will be plenty for day to day browsing and watching movies. Lucid Virtu would be kind of pointless if it wasn't :)

I really think that Ivy @ 4.5 will be easy to achieve and fine for temps. Sure, it might not be the 5ghz a lot of people assumed all the chips should have been achieving, but add to that the improvements overall a few hundred hz shouldn't matter too much.

It might knock down prices a little if Intel feel temps when overclocked are an issue - after all, the K series are sold as unlocked and overclockable.

What this does perhaps highlight is the long-term practicality of adding GPUS to CPUS in terms of allowing the CPU cores to breathe. Ivy it seems is having issues because it simply doesn't have the surface area to shift heat effectively.

Thanks Director & bluntwrapped . I also have a 775 foxconn MB with onboard graphics , I use that as a meausere sometimes , because that can hold its own ,whilst a gt220 nvidia frys itself at 105 degrees on medium settings on roadblocks . My opinion is a 4.2 ivy equals a 4.6 sandybridge , but with less power and poss graphics ? but as it is unfolding heat issues is equalising the choice .
If I can watch quality movies , play facebook games on 2500k graphics or have the luxuary of video editing speeds for my kids at 2700k prices , then the next time a decent offer price comes about the 2500k or 2700k will perhaps be a good choice above Ivy !

The previews I have seen suggest that Ivy is happy @ 4ghz on stock volts so heat not am issue, @ 4.2-4.4 not much additional voltage is needed so temps manageable, but 4.5 is where things get toasty and above that above things get pretty mad.

As you said, clock for clock the Ivy is stronger so that helps balance things out - and despite heat issues it must still be noted that these chips don't use much power

They are like 20-30 watt less when clocked tops, not really owt to get excited about is it?

Well, they don't seem to clock quite as well as the 2500k and everyone seems on the verge of throwing their Z77 boards in the bin and boycotting Intel for life!

So, by those measures, we should surely be claiming that 20-30 watts less is going to solve the pending energy crisis the world is facing and we should all worship Intel.

It'll not be long before Intel start cherry picking their Ivy's and relabel them like they did with the 2700k. I think at that point things will get quite interesting..

I wont be surprised at all , i5"s will most likely be recycled ivy i7"s which have failed QC , I may just be tempted the next time sandybridge are offered on the daily deals , leaving ivybridge to sort itself out perhaps getting one next year .

Im just wondering will the lucid vertu will piggyback with HD3000 graphics , boosting games like the ivybridge will ? Gen 3 is less important for now , i wont be replacing my 6970 anytime soon , except perhaps ill get a second for CF , the non overclocked lightning is on offer .
