Hi everyone.

TL;DR - max £300 budget - which card

I've had a recent PC build upgrading from a 1055t/8Gb to a Ryzen1700/16Gb while retaining my 270x that I picked up a few years ago. Most things are still running fine, but I'm looking at a short term upgrade on my card before considering a Navi/Volta purchase next year where I may also consider upgrading to a 4K display.

I run three monitors, one I use when gaming, one might have Youtube running and the third will have a browser/email open. I don't span or anything like that.

I'm looking to do more PC gaming and getting increased quality etc... that I can't get out of my XBOX.

Currently I play Gears 4, Forza Horizon 3 (FH3), Elite Dangerous and a smattering of other less resource hungry titles like STO.

FH3 is at times dipping below 30FPS on low/medium settings and Gears 4 runs smooth enough, but ideally I would like to be able to get both games running on high/ultra settings at 60fps with a mind to running future titles such as Forza 7 or SW: Battlefront II at the same level.

The general understanding I've taken from reading/watching most of the reviews is that the Nvidia cards tend to favour DX11 titles with AMD cards favouring DX12/Vulcan. I've not really been in the graphics upgrade game for years so was somewhat shocked at the prices due to mining.

Been an ATI/AMD card user for about 15 years. The last Nvidia card I had was Geforce2 MX. Not adverse to an Nvidia card or retaining an AMD card. I had initially hoped to spend somewhere between £200-250 (before I actively started searching), but that perhaps is a tad unrealistic so can stretch up to £300 including delivery.

Overclockers have been recommended by a friend who's bought his last 8pack bundles from here, so I'm looking for honest advice and personal experience as to what card will run best for the titles I play and am looking to get.

Cheers.

For 1080p? this is a god value GTX 1060 for the money (you can get the mini for £30 less):

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £279.89
(includes shipping: £9.90)

The mini for comparison:

Hi, yes it's 1080p gaming at the minute with one monitor either side. I like the look of the AMP edition of that Zotac card due to it having the dual fans, I'm hoping to get something for the weekend. Thanks for the replies so far.

I would make the extra investment and get the 6GB version. It'll last you longer, especially if you end up delaying/not going to 4K next year. The 3GB version also has less VRAM than the 270x the OP already has.

I get you, and I totally understand that the 6gb version is a better card, however the 270x even with 4gb comes no where near the 3gb 1060. I just think that a short term upgrade (the op's own words) £240 seems excessive for 1080p gaming.

Hi all, thanks for the replies. From some of the stuff I've watched, I've seen the games I play at times go over 3Gb VRAM, so I'm keen to maintain 4Gb as a minimum. I've been thinking about that Zotac, but also the 4gb/rx580 sapphire and the Powercolor 8gb one for £278.99. However I'm wary about PowerColor as a brand.

At £300 you are fast approaching on 1070 and vega 56 level. if you considered second hand you could easily get a 980 for £200, or for a short term upgrade grab a 290/290x and then sit tight until the next lot of GPUs

I appreciate the suggestion on second hand, but not keen based on some of the hassles you can have sailing on the bay. To be honest I'd prefer spending the extra and having the warranty for peace of mind.

Out of interest, what do people think of the OcUK cards made by Malin I think it is.

Well thank you to all who responded, after thinking hard it came down to a toss up between the PowerColor RX580 and one of the Aorus 1060 cards. Given the comparable performance between the two, I decided to go for the GTX 1060 Aorus at £299.99 as it'll fit with the Aorus motherboard I have. Also the less power draw/heat issue as well.

Also, had to get me one of those RC cars £1.99 - the cat will love it. :D

edit: Do they still do free Haribo? :D
