280x > 290x?

If you want to max out details at 1080p NOW, sure get the 290x, the jump will be noticeable. If I were you, I would wait a few more months, AMD may release the new cards soon and they need to do it with a bang as they've had two not so great years.
 
It's possible it will be announced at E3. Either war I wouldn't say it was long off now.

If you can I'd try and wait to see what the new cards are like before making a purchase. It just depends how strong your itch is.
 
Aye I think I'll hang fire until the new gen is out. If a 40 year old can't hold an upgrade itch at bay then there's something wrong :p
