280x crossfire upgrade

R9 390x with 8gb vram

crossfire doesnt double up on memory so will have a bigger frame buffer for more demanding game, and with not having heat issue you can overclock the single card to compensate for any loss in preformance.

The dude says he wants to get away from heat and you guys are recommending 390X :p It's a shame NVIDIA have refused to do a 8GB 980 as that could be an option for those put off by the 4GB limit.

Bite the bullet and get a 980Ti imo, it was a good feeling to know I was not far off my stock 295x2 performance I had before when it used to scale well for me, but absolutely monsters it in those new games that take weeks or months to get crossfire profiles, which can be frustrating. I would imagine that will be amplified when compared to a 280X crossfire solution instead of the 295x2. Also ignore any Fury X recommendations if you are at 1080p like in your sig as it competes really badly with the 980Ti at 1080p for around the same price.

The msi 390x cooling is brilliant and doesnt generate that much heat at all. No more than a 980ti / titan x

I meant that one liner in jest hence the :p but seriously most people know the 290X/390X pulls a lot of power for the performance it gives. I know as I've had the 295x2, the core is being cooled enough but that still means a lot of that power draw turns in to heat which warms up your case/room.

Look at the page before temps on that review, it has higher consumption than the Titan X/980Ti and a lot more than the 980 but the performance doesn't tally with that. The performance is not the problem, but AMD have struggled with performance per watt on Hawaii without a doubt, although the Fury improves quite a lot on that.

I would say if you dont wanna go crossfire, then the only real upgrade is a 980ti, you could get a 980 and see similar FPS to what your getting now, but with much less heat and it will look a lot smoother since its only a single card, but i would just save up for the ti.

Just get the whatever fits your maximum budget. Not much can outperformed 280x crossfire by a worthy amount.
Id sell up and try for a second hand 295x2 or 980ti with a big overclock and you'd see a big difference.

I think he wanted a single card and get away from crossfire, ether get a 980ti or get a 980/390x for a lot less yes the 980/390x will not be as fast when crossfire works but they will be faster when crossfire doesn't work.
