280X - Dead?

Hi,

I've got a persistent graphics issue in games. I have a Asus Direct CU II 280X and here's an example:

Link here if the embedding doesn't work. Excuse the poor quality mobile phone footage!

It's strange - I can play for 15mins fine and then the "glitches" will start and I can't get rid of them. It's almost as if the card is overheating but the temps seem fine and the fans don't spin up to anywhere near max.

I've tried updating drivers (previously using Catalyst and now Crimson) - no improvement.

Different games have different symptoms - Aesstto as you can see has the strange flickering in the centre with the background occasionally flashing whereas in other games the whole screen will flicker.

Currently running 64bit Win 7, 8Gb Ram, 4670K, everything pretty standard.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? It's still in warranty so is it RMA time? I'm concerned that if I send it back they won't reproduce the error as it takes a while to kick in.

Any advice appreciated!

Your video link is not working, but from what you have described it does sound like it could be a faulty card. A few troubleshooting steps you can try.

  1. How is the GPU connected to the monitor? DVI, HDMI, DP? Try using a different connection and see if the same issue occurs.
  2. What temperature is the GPU running at? You can monitor this via Radeon Settings/CCC > Overdrive, or you can use third party software like MSI Afterburner. If it's below 85c, you should be fine.
  3. What Power Supply are you using? Do you have a spare you can try to see if that is causing the issue? If you can, swap the PCI-E connectors around and try some different ones.
  4. Can you try the GPU in a different system to see if the same issue occurs? If it does, you are likely looking at a faulty card.

Thanks, does the link underneath the embedded video work? The video should hopefully be here:

To answer your queries
1. HDMI.

3. EVGA 600W.
4. No other systems I'm afraid.

I'll look into the temps and see if I can dig out a different monitor cable when I get home this evening :) From memory I think the GPU was around 70C. I've tried manually increasing the fan speed using Speedfan (blimey it's loud at full throttle!) but I still get the same issue.

I can see the video now. It looks like a faulty card, but i would try the steps i mentioned above just to be 100% sure it's faulty before you apply for an RMA.

Looks like the same problem I had with a 7970 matrix platinum card. I believed it had dodgy vram. I lowered the volts on the memory and took 100 mhz off the memory clock which helped for a few months.

The problem came back so before I was ready to ditch the card, I tried the standard matrix non platinum bios which solved it.

So I still have the card.
