Currently running single card 280x (had xfire until 1 card failed).

I'm looking to upgrade to another single card solution for now with possible dual card at a later date (PSU not an issue). Budget is £200-300

Having looked at AMD's newer cards the 390 (non x) is the only one that meets my criteria although I would have preferred going nvidia this time round but I am just put off by the possible issues I may have with the 3.5 vram when I decide to dual card. Will it really limit the potential that much, anyone have any experience?

Since I only game at 1080p, would a 390 still be a worth while upgrade from a 280x (Will the 8gb vram be useful for xfire?) Or are the 970s worth another look.

I really don't think you're going to have a problem with a 970 if you're only using 1080p. Since the next set of cards will probably be on 16nm instead, then upgrade at that point to a better card, and go for a dual with that.

Truth is neither card is worth it from a 280x. You'd be better served just waiting it out, saving $ and seeing the cheaper air-cooled Fury arrive. Or go CF again.
