28nm NVIDIA GPUs Scheduled for Q4 2011 Release

The so-called target time frame is the fourth quarter of 2011, although the inherent complexity and massive transistor number (compared to existing GPUs) may or may not end up in delays.

I have a feeling that this might come true and 28nm cards from both AMD and Nvidia wont be seen until Q1 2012 at the earliest. Of course I'm no expert and it would be great to see something this year, I'm expecting massive performance increases from these badboys, I stayed away from the 6900 series because of these. I might get an Nivida card next time around, been on Radeons for years now. Thanks for the link bro.

Entirely possible...

First there is the question of the fabs, and their ability to get large 28nm designs out effectively. AMD have access to both Global Foundries and TSMC, whereas Nvidia will be using TSMC exclusively, so if delays at TSMC become an issue then Nvidia could have more problems getting a high-end GPU out than AMD. That said, smaller 28nm designs should be appearing earlier in the year, so it should give the fabs a little time to refine the process before the more delicate large-GPU designs come through in Q4.

As for delays due to GPU design, who knows. I don't think either side is planning a massive redesign of the GPU for the next generation - rather just a modified and re-tweaked upscaling of their existing architectures. For that reason I wouldn't expect any massive Fermi-style delays. But who knows... Things can go wrong on a design level very easily, and if one side or the other needs an extra unexpected respin, that could easily set them back a couple of months.

Overall I don't think there's any particular reason to assume there will be a delay, but there are plenty of factors that could see release pushed to Q1 2012.

I think this 28nm range of GPUs will be a powerful jump forward though. 28nm allows a little over twice the transistors per unit area, so we should see both sides doubling their shader count.

It's unlikely that AMD will switch to GF as their process tech at 28nm should be less advanced that what TSMC have. It also will be very difficult to move a chip from one company to another as the chip layout would need to be completely redone due to the difference in approach- 'gate first' by GF, 'gate last' by TSMC.
