I've found them but they say they are part of a water cooling setup. Are there any standalone back plates out there?

You want a backplate for a reference cooler? If so those backplates can only fit through use of the standard mounting holes. They should fit any cooler as long as the card is reference.

For reference cards. I just wanted to make them look nicer, it's purley aesthetic.

Only thing that might be an issue is screw clearance. A couple of washers should solve that though.

Have a look at the instructions and see if it matches up to screws on your card.

Hmm I would happily pay a bit more for backplates at sale.

You can use them mate, but you might have to remove the screws that line up with the backplate screws, and use the ones that come with the backplate, to fit it. If you use the included thermal pads, that should give you the clearance, needed if there any screws you haven't swapped, under the backplate.
