290 occasional BF4 crashing

I get the odd BF4 crash with my 290, but no other games (so far).

It hasn't done it previously but has just started doing so, i flashed the latest sapphire bios when i got the card and it has been working fine up until last week when it kept freezing during BF4 multiplayer. It doesn't do it all the time but enough for it to be annoying.

Just wondering if this is the all too common black screen problem (sigh).

The card isn't overclocked and is running a stock despite being under water :)

Is there any sort of error logging software i can use or something i can do to try and identify the problem?

It may be worth running GPU-Z with logging enabled whilst running BF4. The driver may be crashing, but GPU-Z will let you know if anything has broken with the card.

GPU-Z - http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/SysInfo/GPU-Z/

If this comes back fairly clear then it could be the driver failing and recovering, it may be worth uninstalling and re-installing your drivers.

How To:

1. Download the Latest AMD Drivers (Latest caps always included with the latest Beta)
http://www2.ati.com/drivers/13-12_win7_win8_64_dd_ccc_whql.exe - Currently 13.12 WHQL

2. Download & install Driver Fusion. Check the contents of the rar file closely. Look for the README file.
http://www.sendspace.com/file/d4hcii

3. Uninstall the AMD drivers+Caps via Add/Remove Programs.

4. Restart your pc. Once back into windows run Driver Fusion. Analyse amd and then delete all entries. Restart.

5. Now you can install the new drivers. Use the express install option unless you have a specific reason not to. Follow the prompt and after installing the drivers, install the caps file. Restart your pc.

I have checked my GPU-Z logs as i have been running it since i have installed my waterblock to monitor temps to be sure it's on correctly over the vrm's, nothing out of the ordinary. I will upload them next time it does it incase i am missing something.

I have been using the 13.11 betas for a while and have recently switched to 13.12 to see if it resolved the issue (it didn't).

I will reinstall the drivers later as per your post and see if that works.

The black screen problem is where the game is running and you can hear everything working but you can't see anything on the screen.

Thanks for clearing that up, the game actually crashes and theres no sound so i don't think it is that.

I didn't get any crashes yesterday and the only thing different was i was not using mumble, not sure if this is just coincidence at thid point though.

Just had a crash after 4 rounds.

It crashes and the windows error report come up, this is the information from the dmp file.

gpuz screenshots (you might have to open a log to figure out what figure is what unless your familiar)

I found gpu-z causes some problems with bf4, so id stop using it. I notice it causes a cpu lag spike every so many seconds. Use afterburner instead on screen display to monitor gpu temps. If you haven't already make sure you have your page file size at auto.

I think i will stop using GPU-Z and see if it makes any difference then. Checked page file and it is on auto.

I'm tempted to take my waterblock off and test it with the stock cooler incase it isn't on corectly and is causing some issues. Then if the issues persist i could RMA it i guess (obivously after the dreaded format etc first).

edit: how do i enable on screen display in game?

If issues still occur after stopping using gpu-z try bumping core voltage 1-2 notches. Sounds like a issue not related to a faulty gpu imo. You can also try verifying BF4 files and reinstalling the DX files from within the game folder. Look for the setup.exe file with the install/redist folder within BF4.

The game is just buggy.

It randomly crashes for people during multi-player no matter what settings or system used.

It was working great a couple of weeks ago, not a crash in site :(
I hope it is just the game, i can play WoW for hours trouble free but i've lost interest in that and want to play more bf4.

One of a zilliion threads about crashing.

I even seen a remrk made by a DICE employee saying certain parts of the game were not tested to help rush the release, then there are the videos showing how poor the netcode is which is well worth watching to be able to realise why you seem to get shot so bloody easily.

Made me feel a bit better stulid :)

MY only concern is it started happening a couple of days after i installed my watercooling, it was great at first. It's had me checking for leaks like a nutter everyday for 2 weeks lol!

To see if it's BF4 or the driver give Valley a go.

Run it on Extreme and tell it to Benchmark

http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/2208/unigine-valley-benchmark-1-0/

If it crashes running Valley it's the driver crashing and you may need to move the voltage up a few more notches.

If Valley runs fine, it's probably just the game, from what I've heard BF4 is meant to be getting some big patches this month so it can support Mantle.

Looked in windows event viewer to see what it crashed on? Bf4 will push the CPU more than most games, worth looking for any whea warnings/errors in event viewer

Good advice this. Put your rig through some hurt and if it crashes, something is up your end but if it doesn't, it is the Betafield 4 buggy game.
