Upgrade itch ! i have a xfx 290 and i am looking at the 390x as an upgrade as i think the 980ti is too expensive !

Worth it ?

Hi

The MSI 390 (non x) is a big card. Not long but wide. I mention that only because you mention space.

I also have an 8gb 290x in another machine and i would say the 390 is probably no more than 5% faster in benmarks (so unnoticable) however it is cooler and the picture quality (a phrase that comes from the VHS era!) is much better over HDMI in my experience for some reason.

Hope this helps.

I agree that the sample size is poor (but not irrelevant), however they are faster than the previous 200 series, though admittedly not by much. That said, I don't think the boost in performance would be worth it.

So why tell the OP he would get a 25% boost in performance when you know it's not true? Will be a slight upgrade that would equate to around 4-5 fps in game. Stick with your 290 OP or find a cheap one to crossfire them if need be. Only other option would be upping your budget to a fury/980ti in my opinion.

I don't know that it's not true. I'm saying it will be faster and not simply a refresh, as Richard Huddy said. :)

It's not a refresh due to technicalities. Which basically amounts to semantics. To any rational people it's just a rebrand/refresh.
290x's clocked and latest drivers are basically the same.

All AMD does is lower their price/performance.

It is a refresh, AMD admitted it was when they made the comparison. Same silicone, just a different BIOS and more vram. You can overclock the 290X and get the same card.
