Just looking for a bit of advice. I sent my Powercolor 290pcs+ back to ocuk as it developed a fault within the 2 year warranty. I've had a web note to say a replacement is on the way and it looks like it's going to be an msi 380. Are these cards comparable in performance?

My understanding was that the 380 was less powerful.

This seems to concur.

I'd be pushing them for a 390 or at least a 380x.

An R9 390 is the modern equivalent in terms of performance with twice the memory, when you do a small overclock.

But the R9 380 is not all bad, it allows 4k VSR.;)

I'm of the opinion that the grunt is more important than the RAM. I'm looking at upgrading to 1440p and just want to make sure I'm not getting a bit short changed. I was under the impression that the replacement had to be at least the same performance? Hmmm

The 380 is nowhere good enough as a replacement. The 290 pcs+ comes factory overclocked and is as fast as a stock 290x. What they are sending you in reality is a 285. The performance difference will be pretty big.

In effect they are sending you a mid end last Gen card to replace a top end last gen card. This is not even close if you ask me. It should be a 390. I thought it was the same performance or better. Pcs+ clocks are 1040/1350 so similar in speed to a 390

That's a really odd test ....

The MSI clocks are not what it has listed ...

NOT 1Ghz its 1100

Memory is NOT 1250 its 1500

and I know this as I have two ...

However I would just take the cash equivalent and buy a 390 and put an OC on it.
yes because the 390x has had its clocks increased. Its the same card but with higher clocks.

No a 380 is a 285 and not comparable with a faster 290. I would expect a 390 in place of a 290 certainly not a 380.

Sorry to hijack a little, but how do you get on with your crossfire? Considering getting a second MSI 390x when the prices come down a bit but temps worry me, one runs hot enough!

Bailey said that OCUK received a partial refund from the manufacturer and have sent the 380 as an equivalent replacement. I have disputed this, asked if it can be escalated and given him the link to this thread. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt as he has a good reputation on he forums for getting things done.

I wonder whether it's the fact that they have doubled the ram on the 390 which makes it look like the 380 is equivalent?

Annoying thing is that they have sent it out without discussing with me first so if I do get a 390 I'll have to sort the 380 return. Just for info the card was sent to powercolor on 04/01/16 so almost a month in.

I'm confused, how would OCUK receiving a partial refund (I assume this means you haven't received a partial refund) make any difference in this scenario (them sending you a 380)? It would only really make sense if they had sent you a 390...

A 380 is NOT a replacement for a 290, the only "like for like" would be a 390...

Performance wise a 380 is a 'rebadged' 280 with extra ram - no way equalling a 290 imo

If by ' a month in ' you mean you have only had it 1 month then i would want a direct replacement or full refund.

Though,

If by ' a month in ' you mean that you returned it 1 month before the 2 year warranty was up, then i would expect to take some monetry loss and a 380 would seem more reasonable

I haven't received any refund. I will only except like for like as you say, as it was in warranty. Not my fault that the card lasted less than one and a half years and I don't want to be penalised for that.

As I say though, I'm confident that OCUK will do the right thing so will give them the benefit of the doubt that it is a mistake for now.
