290 xfire - Battlefield 4 stuttering

This is really annoying me, on 14.6 drivers. Have frame pacing method to 0 or 1 doesn't cure it, nor does changing v sync settings, nor does switching between mantle and dx11. Here is what the graph looks like:

It was never like this, I haven't played it for several driver updates and patches, and I haven't had time for gaming recently, but it runs fine in dota 2, which I can always make time for .

I will monitor ram usage, as I am using 4 gigs with only 2 chrome tabs open, and a youtube video playing.
