Going from a 2900 to a 4870 how much peformance would i gain ? a good example question would be, the 2900 pumps out just say 10 frames a second, how much would the 4870 ?

Realistically it's gonna be at least twice as fast 
, if not as much as three, but that depends on whether your in a CPU limited situation (i.e. low res, not many effects/HDR/AA etc).
Looking at your spec, the card will fly as long as your above 1280 * 1024 res
(It will still be damn fast at any res anyway realistically )
