Since i installed my x2900xt, after a little while in games the computer locks up and the sound loops repeatedly, and i have to do a forced reboot as the computer wont respond

Any ideas why?

Sorry, rest of pc is e6400 @ 3Ghz, 2Gb OCZ gold 6400 and asus p5b
The power supply is a hiper 580w, which other people are running the card on no problems
I reinstalled vista and its got the latest drivers...any ideas?

Should be fine that. Have you set any options in the Bios that may affect anything, mainly PCI-E options. I remember I had a few on my P5B and it played silly buggars

Erm, any ideas what settings might do that? I've changed a few things in there in order to overclock, but it was fine before
Any things relating to pci-express that i should look at?

Nope i havent - its been running fine for a few months so i took the real world to be a good enough test. I'll try knocking it down a bit though, see if that fixes the problem. thanks

so you overclocked your cpu without even testing it to make sure its stable and carried on using it like that? hmm ......

rofl. No doubt it will be that you should always stress test as these things come to bite you in the bum a few months down the line ;)

Nope no audigy sound card, just built in.
Dont you roffle me young man, im a supreme computer builder...*cough*
Right so i should stress test it, what is the best program to do so? cheers

Orthos (SP1? - think thats the one with multi core compatability). Leave it running for 8hrs on the cpu stressing mode (believe thats small fft). If it passes Orthos cpu stress test for 8hrs, the CPU's pretty much covered, then you have other components like RAM and GPU to look at :)

Memtest+ is still considered the definative memory testing tool as I remember.

Name the games, i only have 1 game thats a problem with my 2900xt also which Os you using? and also which cat drivers.

I know that some opengl games have problems mainly down to a bug ethier in drivers or game that causes vpu recoverys ( tom|nbk said so )

From the brief description you have put that may be whats happening, 1 make sure vpu recovery is enabled and report is ticked that way if it is a vpu recovery then hopefully the game will recovery so no need for a restart.
