290x - can i do this to power it temporarily?

My current PSU is an OCZ 650W.
have read under load the 290X can use 475W
I have an overclocked 3570K @ 4.6GHz @1.35v

Q. Can I use a second PSU to connect to one of the PCIE connectors on the card? I have a SilverPower 400W which has 312W on the 12v.

My card arrives tomorrow and my new 850W PSU on Monday so just as a stop gap.

It'll be fine. There's no way a 290x can use 475w on its own without serious modding, that number is probably for the whole system.

I think that is for the entire system. Just run you card at stock until your new PSU arrives.

Ye its the whole system.. also he has a much more power hungry cpu - i7-3930K @ 4.3ghz

You could use the 650w as a permanent solution if you wanted

My 290x runs fine in my rig with a 750W OCZ but i have both my CPU and GPU heavily overclocked with 1241/1500 on GPU when gaming and 5.1GHz on CPU which is an 8 core fx. I'd say the difference in power between my rig and yours is well over 100w including the overclocksand if you keep yours at stock until the PSU arrives.
