Sorry for the long post but just trying to get some insight in the ghost that is the 290X at the moment.

It seems the 290X is hard to find in stock anywhere except one or two units here or there and OCUK having a ETA for a proper replenishment set to the 30/11. In contrast Gibbo has mentioned he will have a very large stock of 290 cards available for launch.

It seems AMD are consciously producing small amounts of the 290X to be available to retailers. Can the 290X be that more difficult to deliver than a 290 or am I missing something?

Maybe AMD see the 290X as a statement that they're back more than anything and not really a profit gainer. It could be a problem for AMD to make the 290X cheaper (which they initially did but NVIDIA put the 290X in no mans land with the significant price drop on the 780) than a 780 and still make profits.

It looks like the 290 will be the card to really fight off the 780 on price and performance but the future for the 290X looks a little uncertain.

It's frustrating there are so few units available, not sure why they released them already when there were so few.

Im trying to find to buy, but alas they're either from competitors and severely overpriced because of limited stock, or out of stock.

Frustrating is not even the word.

It has been pretty frustrating to get hold of one but I finally found one in stock for £439.00 (BF4 edition) - It's with the courier now for delivery tomorrow.
:)

Yea I'm waitin 6days now to order 2 290X but they're always out of stock and the bf4 edition is for £515... But I bought bf4 already so yea sad me :(

It's not that surprising I guess especially if yields are poor, 290X is the fully fledged chip (like 780Ti) but NVidia will have been collecting 780Ti dies for months now whilst making lots of money selling imperfect dies (780, Titan). AMD have done things in reverse so they'll need to hope that yields are good enough to meet demand from the off or there will be shortages.

this is the thing that got me thinking there will be something below the 290 on the same chip, titan being cut down compute card, 780 cut down of that, 290x only has one cut down, there's going to be a lot of fails that dont make 290!? so they got go somewhere

On a mature process perhaps not enough to make it worth a consumer card, time will tell. Likewise, the Gk110 will also be benefiting from improving yields too. Likely why nVidia are so happy to release a full fat chip to the GPU market now, they have sufficient supply/reduced demand to not to need to prioritise their proffesional line or supercomputer contracts.

edit. I was thinking perhaps an oem variant but they would want a steady supply. They could just articificially lock down some I suppose.

I reckon the 290 will really be the card to take on the 780 and potentially get the price and performance spot on. When the aftermarket OC 290's come it will be a great option for people who want great performance at a 780 beating price.
