I'm currently running 2GB OCZ PC6400 GOLD, Would I see any benifit in getting another 2 sticks and running 4GB for high end gaming. Or would be a complete waste of money and be better off waiting till the middle of next year? :)

The mobo will likely knock the command rate down to 2T. This equates to a good few percent less performance. If you need the extra memory more than that few percent performance, then yeah, do it.

No, you'll see no improvement with Windows XP. With Vista the story should be different, but XP can only look at 2Gb at a time anyway.

If you want a speed increase in games get a Raptor or a graphics card upgrade. If you've got a Raptor get a RAID of Raptors.

4Gb is a waste atm.

XP Pro 32bit can only see 4Gb, thats everything, HD cache, processor cache, graphics mem.

So in normal terms only about 3-3.4gb is actually usable...

But still more than 2gb. :D

No. XP can pretend to be Server 2K3 which lets it 'see' 3Gb. That's what the /3Gb switch does. Did you read that technote?

When the /3GB switch is used with Windows XP Professional, with Windows Server 2003, Datacenter Edition, with Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition, the /3GB switch works identically across versions. This functionality lets device-driver developers test their drivers in this configuration without having to install one of the Windows Server 2003 products just listed. The user-mode memory space is now limited to 3 GB.

In any case, Windows XP Pro 32 cannot use memory above the 2Gb barrier. It has to page it in and out. The /3Gb mode described above lets it replicate the capability of the 64bit plaforms for testing purposes. It runs slower like that otherwise it would be turned on by default, surely? The ability to directly address memory in the area between 2 and 8Gb is one of the huge benefits of Windows XP 64-bit/Server 2K3 and Vista.

This is actually in the latest batch of questions for the 70:270 certification exam.
