Hi,

I've got 2GB of system memory.
I've used QSoft's RamDisk to create a virtual ram drive using 1GB of that memory and I've put my paging file on it (the drive is loaded before all the services start).

Yes yes.. the page file (PF) is supposed to be more than twice the size of the memory, but I'm sure a 1GB PF will suffice.

What are people's opinions of this setup please? Is it a good idea / counter productive?

- Toff.

I would have thought it would be counterproductive to be honest, you're better just letting windows have the 2Gb to use up, you'll rarely page at all.

Definately interested to see what results you get with this though, keep us upto date :)

On a slightly different note, does anyone have one of those Ram harddrive things OCuk are selling?

How fast are they? I imagine that for things like audio editing they are amazing. Teamed up with a dual core cpu they must be able to do anything in seconds, even load BF2!!

Yes, they are fast but they are limited in speed by the interface so in reality they are not that much faster than a good RAID-0 setup.

The main advantage is the nearly zero access time but the major disadvantage is the very limited storage capacity (not good for video) the fact that no power means you lose the data (It has a battery but still) and the price.

As for the original question I doubt it will make a huge difference, maybe a small ramdisk with frequently used files is better like the temporary internet files or something like that.
I tried a ramdisk before and it made my internet go a little faster but I doubt it would make a difference today with a newer computer.
