Just got a second 2*1Gb Kit of 5300 Balistix, but Windows only saw the original 2Gb; POST screen and CPU-Z both saw the full 4Gb however. So, I did some research and saw memory remapping mentioned, usual in the sense of turn it on.

A reboot later and I discover it was on... tried turning it of and Post says 3Gb, CPU-Z says 4Gb and Windows says 2.93Gb.

Now, I'm fine with the 2.9 in Windows; what I can't understand is why BIOS sees 3Gb, but CPU-Z sees 4Gb. Also, why did turning the memory remapping off if it when it should be on?

are you on a 32bit version of windows? if you are you've hit the 4gb limitation of system memory (ie RAM, GFX, etc all added up) in 32bit windows. you can use physical address extension to use the undetected RAM on 32bit windows or move over to 64bit windows.

otherwise post some more info about your mobo, especially its chipset.
have you got the latest bios too?

I know about the limits of 32bit OSs, hence why I was fine with 2.9Gb it eventually showed up. What I was asking was why turning memory remapping off fixed the problem; as far as I was aware you need it ON for more than 2Gb.

bios bug maybe?
btw do you have an amd or intel processor?
what motherboard do you have?
have you tested your two new sticks, with the old ones taken out? (just to make sure you havent got dodgy mem)

what I can't understand is why BIOS sees 3Gb, but CPU-Z sees 4Gb
CPU-Z reads only what is physically in the memory slots (at least in this sense it does), so it cares not what the BIOS or Windows says.
