I am aware that there are lots of dodgy SD cards around but this was not from ebay but a respectable store. Anyway when I format the card I in windows using a card reader I only get 1gb of space. Any ideas?

your using FAT16 rather than 32 maybe?
try using NTFS as fat32 reaches its limit about there

I dont get an option to format in NTFS, although looking in disk Manager it does shows the other gig as unallocted. How can I force it to NTFS??

edit - just tried convert e: /fs:ntfs which said it worked buts it still showing as fat in disk manager

FAT 16 has a max capcity of 2GB and 2TB for FAT 32.

I doubt you'll be able to format it NTFS as I've never seen it possible on removable storage. Try FAT32, if that doesn't work, then maybe it's not the file system.

fat32's limit is way higher than that, 32gb was the original windows limit, but it can read it far higher than that

max filesize for fat32 is 4gb
