Hi.

I don't want to get into the X99/Z97 debate, but any comments/suggestions on the following? I plan to add a second GTX980 at a later date.

CPU: Intel Core i7-5930K 3.5GHz 6-Core Processor
CPU Cooler: Corsair H110 94.0 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler
Motherboard: Asus X99-DELUXE ATX LGA2011-3 Motherboard
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-2666 Memory
Storage: Samsung 840 EVO 500GB 2.5" Solid State Drive
Video Card: Zotac GeForce GTX 980 4GB Video Card
Case: Corsair 750D ATX Full Tower Case
Power Supply: SeaSonic Platinum 1000W 80+ Platinum Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply
Optical Drive: Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 8.1 (OEM) (64-bit)

General use PC, a fair bit of gaming and slight thought (ie not too fussed if I have to do a full rebuild, I'll shrug and carry on!) for future proofing with regards to Oculus Rift CV1.

Replacing an i7-920/7950 build.

Any comments or suggestions gratefully appreciated. :)

Cheers for the replies so far. I do plan on sticking in a second 980 at some point. I'll be using this with an Oculus Rift and, currently, it doesn't provide the optimum experience with SLI but with the new cards/drivers/SDK that will change... apparently.

I'm hoping the above, with a second 980, will see me through the consumer release of the Rift.

The above will be fine for the next few years for sure and then adding another 980at that time will be relatively cheap and a great upgrade

Do you really need 32gig of RAM? You could save some there as DDR4 is insanely expensive just now. Would 16gig not be enough?

Do I need it? No, most likely not - in fact that was one "downgrade" I was seriously considering. The only issue I thought was that X99 being quad channel 4 x 8Gb would be better than 8 x 4Gb *if* I upgrade in the future.I admit I don't know enough about memory channels, etc, to even know if that's relevant or not though!

I'd suggest a 970 over a 980. Especially if you're going SLI.

I see that point, definitely better bang for buck, but I'm worried about the consumer release Rift. I'd rather stick in a 980 and then another than get 2x970s now and then potentially have to sell them and get something else. That was my thinking there anyway.

The 5820K is the cheaper option if you only plan on 2 way sli. I doubt you would notice any difference between x16/x8 on the 5820K and x16/x16 on the 5930K.

Also you don't need a 1KW psu. The Superflower or EVGA 750W/850W would do fine.

I would change the 32GB of RAM for 16GB, and then change the 980 for a pair of 970's :)

Might also change the 5930 for a 5820.

e; I read your reasoning, and fair enough I suppose. Although do note that the 980 is only about 15% faster than a single 970 if I recall correctly.

Speccing down the memory and CPU makes sense... but then I get into the internal argument in my head that says "well, may as well just get a 4790K/Z97 rig in that case"! ;)

Thanks for your thoughts so far. :)

5930k doesn't make much sense with a dual card setup. 16x/8x to 16x/16x isn't worth £130 imo.

If you're really in the money > sense bracket, you might as well go for the 5960x and bolt on an extra I3 just for kicks :)

Ha ha, I hope I'm not money > sense, I'm definitely taking things on board here! ;)

Initially I was more just concerned with what the Oculus Rift CV1 will potentially require and pushing things pretty far, but not too far... at least that was the aim. I could wait until then, but I have a Rift DK2 that my current rig struggles to make the best of and I've had this PC for several years and quite fancied building again. :)

Okay, thanks to your advice I've downspecced to the following -

CPU: Intel Core i7-5820K 3.3GHz 6-Core Processor
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws Series 16GB (4 x 4GB) Memory
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 850 G2 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply

That's over £300 saved to go towards the second 980, cheers. :)
