Hi,

need a liquid cooled gaming system.
I have some criteria:
  • must have GTX 580 3gb (EVGA) or something similar
  • must be 2600k
  • must use D5 pump
  • PSU must be 1kw+ (100% modular)

I've tried, but got stuck completely on mobos :(
needs to include win 7 aswell ;)

Can go over if it's really really worth it

Thanks in advance

any particular reason you need the 3GB versions?

also, will you be doing anything that will make use of hyperthreading (ie, anything other than gaming + general use)

this is for a friend. He wants it so i'm not going to stop him

Hyperthreading will be used, 3GB won't, but he really wants it so I thought why not?

i was going to say that it would cost him a huge amount more for the 3GB versions, but the 1.5GB versions have shot up in price (i remember when the cheapest ones were £330, now you cant get one under £370)

since i know nothing about watercooling i'll leave this for someone else to spec

Hmm, that's a huge problem - this thread is kinda between sections...

Ok, I would appreciate help with the mobo, HDD + software, RAM please. I'm sure I can do the rest ;)

an you guys try to keep the costs to a minimum - thanks :)

for starters, maybe?

Not sure how much you'd need for a 580 (reference design for water cooling, any such thing with 3GB?) and water cooling on top. And SSD :)

Can downgrade RAM to 12800C9 (XMS3 is cheapest), and various components.

As above, not sure if the GPU is reference design - for WCing... But I figure £400 should be enough to do the whole watercooling thing...
Also as he's using hyperthreading I presumed he'd make use of 16GB of RAM, but if he doesn't need it, take it back to 8GB.

If he didn't feel like watercooling though, and wanted to air cool then here is one beast of a machine :)
Truthfully I know he probably wants to watercool, but specing a £2k rig is fun :)

Thanks for the help so far. I'll take the RAM suggestion from king damager and the pump from oliver (BW, that basket downloader is EPIC!!!!)

I'm insisting on an EVGA card for the long warranty wih allowance of liquid cooling and he now wants 2.5gb 570 SLI

The bundle wih win 7 and HDD looks good. HAF X is a great case, but i've already done a build with it so want to try something else. Unfortunately the silverstones don't look oo good for liquid so i think i'll stick to he xigmatek :D

mobo wise, can someone explain to me the advantage of that board over, say, he cheapest Z68? I am a complete n00b with mobos :(

SSD is unneeded as he won't utilise the speed at all and i'm suspecting the 128gb will restrict him a lot (he's even n00bier than me :p)

I'm going to get the silverstone ST1000-G as it is cheaper, smaller and I LOVE SILVERSTONE!!!!!!!

what about the extreme7 over the extreme4 gen3? :)

I'd say 2x this over the 570/580 :)

why does it have to be a d5? what about the dcc? ocuk don't seem to do the ultra(think its 15w) version.

will he be wcing the graphics card as well? if so then will need 2 loops to get the best.

The true god of WCing towers is the TJ07, or TJ11 now a days. Although saying that maybe a Corsair 800D as that's been wc'd to death. Think the Elysium isn't bad though - especially for price.

Motherboard is being recommended because it's Gen3, meaning it will support IvyBridge and PCI3.0 when they come out (supposedly). It's also a lot cheaper than a lot of its competition for the performance it offers.

For SSD - you'd only be using it as a boot drive and a place to maybe house the most popular games/Photoshop... The other HDD would be used for most of his data :p

Better VRM (16 phase), support for upcoming PCIE3 (x2 bandwidth), it's generally a good board. I would probably take the P8Z68-V board over the MSI though. Seems to have better layout. Worth reading reviews on various boards.

I have no idea bout watercooling, so I leave that to others :)

PSU looks good.

The case looks good.

Davefran, thanks, but i need EVGA card, EN waterblock, and silverstone PSU ;)

trying to keep costs down now as 570 2.5's are bloody expensive!!!!

I'd say 2x this over the 570/580 :)
he'll be doing video processing stuff so need CUDA :D, also, I hate AMD :D

considered DDC but decided D5 because of possibility of extra rads and he'll have two gfx cards etc

will he be wcing the graphics card as well? if so then will need 2 loops to get the best.
yep, but it will be fine in one loop as i'll have good rad(s)

I have a TJ07 so want to work with something else. TJ11 only offers an advantage with air cooling and size but I think it looks ugly from top :/

yeah, that's what i've got, but 1, he won't need speed 2, he'll keep saving everything onto the SSD

tj07 hands down if watercooling, you're not doing it right if you choose any other case ;)

as said, I already have TJ07 and want to work with something else
