2k on a 4k!

No you should have bought a 2k monitor in the first place....... :)

If you've got 980ti sli and you are having to run a game at 2k on the Acer then something wrong with your setup as 980ti SLI should handle most games very well at 4k unless its a game that doesnt support SLI.

Question is why are you wanting to do 1440p ? If your PC is struggling with a game then dial down the settings it will look better than running at 1440p. Unless its something like World of Warships which doesnt scale well on 4k.
 
You could always try running the lower resolution with black borders I suppose, but depending on how large your screen is that might make the viewable area actually quite small. I'd probably be more tempted to dial down graphics settings though before running at a non-native resolution.
 
Cant you use Nvidias scaling, DSR? I thought thats suppose to allow you to up and downscale while keeping everything smoothed out and looking good.

Im on AMD and i only get one scaling option so i cant test it for ya.
