Death Star or Mount Doom, it depends on the day.
And I know the first reply would be get both. But I can't afford that atm. So I've been looking at the ASUS VG248QE for my 144hz option. Any recommendations please? I mainly play FPS online.

My basket at Overclockers UK:
Total: £1,022.43 (includes shipping: £22.50)

The 240hz G-Sync monitor will be £299 very early next month. Features highest refresh rate widely available, strobing backlight, low response times but average colour accuracy and contrast ratios.

The LG is a good cheap gaming monitor, with a strobing backlight and good image quality for TN. Has FreeSync, but won't work with a Nvidia GPU.

The Samsung has by far the best colour accuracy and contrast ratios of all 3, strobing backlight but slightly higher pixel response times and a sharp curve. Has FreeSync, but won't work with a Nvidia GPU.

Your 980ti would likely pair best with the Asus due to G-Sync.
But if you're playing fast-paced FPS, such as CS:GO, then FreeSync/G-Sync is less important in my opinion.

Thanks, does the CPU and GPU make a great deal of difference when it comes to 144hz gaming? I would have thought I would have been able to meet the requirements.

Depends on exactly which games you play, but your GPU is still fast and CPU is okay when overclocked for 1080p high refresh gaming.

Could think about CPU upgrade as your next move (either a 2600k or new platform)but I would wait until Ryzen+ performance is known early in next year.
I doubt very much that I'm going to bother with another cpu on that chipset. I'll be looking towards getting a new computer next year.

Save up for 27" 144hz g-sync 1440p (assuming you use nvidia)
I love my 980ti and its still one of the better cards out there still considering the price. I imagine my next upgrade will be Nvidia, but this can't be guaranteed. I've had as many ATI cards as I've had Nvidia.

I was also in this same predicament 2 years a go. I first bought a 4k monitor (a cheapish one with a TN panel) before realizing I can't actually play anything in 4k as my computer quite simply wasn't good enough haha. I then asked on here and someone recommended I send back the 4k screen and go for a 144hz monitor, I haven't looked back since. I mainly play online fps games as well and I can't believe I was putting up with 60hz before, once you try 144hz anything worse will simply just look awful. Needless to say it was a great investment!

My screen is an acer GL something something, worth just around £250 (at the time). You could easily get a decent 1080p 144hz monitor now for around £200 (if not less). I believe 1440p 144hz monitors are now becoming the thing to have so you could always check how much they're going for. But I imagine it would be at least a hundred quid more, but it could be worth it for the long term investment. Good luck.
Good shout and I totally get your point as I even said this in my original post. Problem is I have a really old 1080p monitor and I know it's only a matter of time befoe it dies. You can notice it especially when the screen is dark it has wave white lines. It needs replacing.
