Is it possible to use the bottom pci-e slot as the primary GPU slot without having the top slot occupied on the 680i?

Yeah you can do, as long as it has enough PCI-E lanes. I don't think the nforce 570 has a dual 16x lanes so as above, you will loose performance.

i believe that the bottom slot runs at 4x until SLI is enabled so you would loose a lot of performance
570i or 680i?

The 680i has two x16 PCie. One on the MCP and one on the SPP. I don't see why one wouldn't work irrespective of the other.

680i - dual 16x pci-e.

Just wondered really as one is called the 'primary' and one the 'secondary'. I know I cant use the middle one as that runs at 4x but the top and bottom run at 16x each. Cant test until I have all the waercooling hooked up and by then it'll be a little late as the tubing will have to be re-routed if not.

/crosses fingers.
