This is pretty much a speculative thread, but I have owned a few nice cars before, but currently driving a 2002 Fiat Punto Sporting (no jokes!! :p ) as it gets me from A-B and is v cheap to run. Im interested in getting a second car to mainly use as a "weekend" car, and was leaning more towards some type of Jap motor. Currently my attention is focussed to the Mazda RX7, as there are some goo examples about that have been looked after, serviced regularly and in some cases have already had full rebuilds. Does anyone have any suggestions of similar types of cars under 5k. Cheers, look forward to some replies!

ive been thinking about motorbikes for a long time....but (I mentioned this before on a thread) my mum said she would cut me out of her will if I got one :(

I reckon if I can find a good rx7 that has been well looked after and has had a recent rebuild.....it would be the best choice, the 200sx is a good alternative, but for me, the mazda pips it in style and desirability, need to drive one though.
the fiat.....I love the 20v turbo, but if I ever wanted to tune it, I dont think I would want more than 220bhp going through the front wheels. The civic is out of the question, because it is a civic (no offence to owners).
I dont think I could find a decent twin turbo supra under 5k.

I think you'd have trouble finding a pampered RX7 for that money. If budgets that tight you really have to consider the running costs. A decent 200SX would be less of a risk, and cheaper to run, but less of a exotic. Something like a RX7 you'd have to work out a budget for running costs, servicing and some money when something breaks.

That said I'd love a RX7 but I can't afford it. So live the dream! :D

In what way a 325 going to be better than a 328 - a 328 will be newer, surely, and of course more powerful..

im sure your more than aware that a 328 has more power...

yes its more powerful... all 1bhp more powerful and its higher insurance group. im sure thats a benefit, top speed is a touch more (but like that matters) and 0-60 is a touch faster (again, like that really matters).
since when has newer automatically meant better?

Forgive me if you think this is rude, but how incredibly selfish of her. She's your mother not your ruler. I'm very glad my parents don't have an attitude like that.

Fox, the 325 (assuming we are comparing E30/E36) will also be lighter, cheaper and more rewarding to drive. Modern does not always mean fantastic - it depends what you want from the car in question.

Yeah like that old m3 they went round the track in on fifth gear and discovered it was only slightly faster than a transit van.

Only becuase it's artificially restricted for German insurance rules - it has far more potential than the 325i.
