2nd Gear Issues

Hi all

Had a ride out in the 172 earlier today, and on the way back I noticed that everytime I went to change down to 2nd, it made a crunching noise as if I hadn't fully pressed the clutch. The only way I could stop the crunching from occuring was to slow to a crawl before selecting 2nd. Once into 2nd however, there were no problems at all and changing out of 2nd didn't cause any issues either.

All the other gears seem fine, I could change into them as normal, just 2nd that seemed to be affected by this crunching.

Does anybody have any ideas what the problem might be? Could I be looking at an expensive gearbox problem?

Cheers

My 172 sometimes does this in 3rd, but its not as bad as you described. Only a slight crunch when doing a fast down change without blipping the throttle. Maybe changing the gearbox oil for starters might improve it?

I'll try double declutching in the morning, see if that makes any difference.

With regards to fixing, try changing the oil, but what I'm essentially looking at is a knackered synchro which would in turn mean new gearbox time?

:(

My clio 16v does this when i put it in 2nd at higher speed, i knackered it tho rammed it in without fully pressing the clutch down lots of grinding later and it appears to crunch slightly when putting it in when the box is warm.

Only option is to have the box refurbed/new box. Although i have heard that changing the box oil can also help these situations.

Unfortunately its an expensive job if the fluid change doesn't affect it. One of the guys I talk to from Cliosport.net had this on his 172 and he ended up £800-£900 down IIRC :(

The 2nd gear is often the first to go when the syncros go on these boxes.

I'm wondering if the guy you bought it from has pulled a fast one. If he's replaced the gearbox fluid already to cover the problem you're up **** creek :(

I have the exact same problem in my old S reg saxo. First gear is a bit tricky but exactly as you described with the second gear. But the car is coming up to 100,000 miles so its getting ready for the scrappers. Whats this double clutching all about?
