2nd GPU usage in non-SLI titles

So I’ve just bought my first game that has no SLI support, Assassin’s Creed Origins. It’s not running too bad at all, between 50 and 80 FPS at 1080p with a mix of high and very high settings, looks great. Play it at 50hz with Vsync and it’s a solid smooth 50fps with no drops (yet! Might get more demanding later on) on a 780 ti.

Only thing is - there isn’t an SLI profile at all, yet when playing with SLI turned on the usage on the 2nd GPU fluctuates between 8-10% - what’s it actually doing if the game hasn’t got an SLI profile? And do non-SLI games play better with SLI turned off in settings or no difference?

I've noticed this in non sli supported games too. I don't know what it's doing. I don't think turning sli on or off will make a difference but you could try it to see if there's any difference

What game engine is Origins? If its the same as the older Assassins creed titles you might get away with using inspector to use an older assassins creed games sli bits to enable SLI.
From memory I think older Assassins creed titles had issues with SLI though, someone may be able to correct me.

I’ve used Nvidia Inspector on a few occasions before to “force” SLI support. Unfortunately the profiles for any previous AC games do not work (in Origins they actually scale very well but cause unplayable flickering - frustrating). Not set to Physx, just seems odd that the 2nd card sits at ~10% usage when there is no profile. If I turn SLI off altogether the 2nd card sits at 0% usage.

I read somewhere that the previous games worked well with SLI at least in their final patched state.

I was able to get a more steady frame rate when I disabled SLI.

This is at 4k ultra but with scaling set to 80% (I think cant remember off the top of my head the exact number) this is on a gtx 1080 though

I’ve tried it both ways now and haven’t noticed a difference either way... haven’t checked out frame times to see whether I’m just missing something though. Turning SLI on and off all the time (the majority of the games I play do support SLI) is just not something I’ll be bothered to do on a daily basis lol.

you can disable SLI in the control panel for each individual game.
Go to the game in the control panel 3d settings and there some setting saying SLI rendering just select disable or what ever it is from the drop down box

Ah gotcha I missed that somehow - was looking in the “3D and SLI settings” or whatever it’s called and could only find a global setting

Now I think about it I might have actually tried that but still got the usage on the 2nd GPU - it goes down to 0% when I use the global setting. But I’ll check when I get home

Havent touched the game in a couple of weeks but I dont remember getting any GPU usage from disabling it non globally.

This often happens. It's likely that something in the driver becomes active when SLI is enabled which puts a small load on the second card. Best to disable it if not using SLI, and have it be a brick.

I'm surprised people still opt for 2 card rigs at this point, the situation is not getting any better.

Thought it must be something like this - still seems quite strange. I’ll have a look at my settings later and get them changed.

The second one was an impulse buy after I found another cheap one on eBay... I know it wasn’t a clever move but out of all the games I play there are only a couple that don’t support it. In titles that do support it they are extremely fast for a ~£200 setup.

Ah yes I forgot to mention they’re 780Tis - unless you’ve already seen that in my sig.

Lol I wish, I think 1 1080Ti is worth substantially than my entire PC at the moment! :D
