Hello all.

I'm after a cheap 2nd hand laptop for around £100.

The laptop will only be used for internet while sitting on the sofa.

Don't fancy paying out £300 for a fancy netbook so i thought this may be a better idea.

So basically all i need from the hardware is to run XP, and have enough juice to surf the internet. Built in wifi would be nice, but i can always buy an external card if needed.

So, i have no idea which models are worth looking at. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hope you can help.

Gil.

Would suggest any thinkpad.

I have an X31. You could go for an X40 series, or if you require bigger screen/optical drive go for T series / T42 etc.

Can be found for less than £150 depending on spec.(ram/no. of batteries / dock station etc)

(Mine was £170, 1 GB, P4M1.7, wifi, Docking station, good battery,charger,40GB about a year ago) Really easy to add more ram/harddrive etc. I had the misfortune to dissassemble an Acer and compared to the IBM you can see the difference in design and build quality and accessibilty is night and day.

Possibly for less than a hundred you could get the 20 series, these will have PIII rather than P4M, still find for XP/webbrowsing.

Spring for a little more (~£200) and you could get a tablet version with touch screen - ideal for lazily browsing the net.

Absolutely solid machines that I expect to last longer than their usefulness. Mine has been stood on before, with no damage.... Can pick it up by the corner without any flex, and the legendary IBM thinkpad keyboard, regarded by many to be the best laptop keyboard ever.

Mine has the wifi card plugged in to the internal slot , but you can always get an usb/PCMCIA adaptor until you can aquire one.

</thinkpad pimp mode off>

Alternatively, check the older Dell D series / D600 or something.
